I'm currently experiencing problems with steering/braking, which my garage tells me is mainly due to the differential bearing in my gearbox on it's way out. The symptoms are very similar to warped brake discs, i.e. wobbling when braking, and also slight wheel wobble at high speed.

When jacking up the front of the car, and rotating the nearside front wheel by hand, there is a very audible grinding/crunching noise, which seems rather odd.

So, my question is, is there an affordable solution to replacing this bearing without a specialist charging a fortune for a full gearbox stripdown and rebuild?

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers

Bob

Hey Rick, Thanks for your reply. It's a 5 speed, 1999 model on a V plate. I believe it's a 110. The engine code is AHF. My garage told me that it's fairly important that the gearbox numbers match? Apparently they are not all compatible. Maybe you can shed some light on this? Sounds like you know your stuff :) Do you know the mileage on your box?

Cheers

Bob

Hi Bob

The gearbox i have is off a 2002 Skoda Octavia ASV engined car
Gearbox is coded EGS and seller listed as 66,000 miles.

I didn't use it as my problem turned out to not be the Gearbox but was a wheel bearing in the end.

if yours is EGS it will be fine (look om white sticker in your boot (offside in spare wheel well) three letters will be AHF for your engine then the next 3 letter one should be your gearbox code ---- EGS with luck.
if you can't find white sticker same as is inside your service book near the front ;)

Rick

Hi Bob

I will need to see what the difference is between the EGS & EBF boxes

they are both 110 hp so there can't be much
probably just final drive ratio at a guess
My EGS has very long ratios which i like with a tuned diesel
I will have a dig and report back mate

Rick

Hi Bob

Just designation thats different
EGS is interchangable with EBF
Both ASV & AHF use same block & flywheel clutch & starter motor.
only the ASV has forged Mahle pistons and oil jets
the AHF uses cast pistons with no oil jets.

EGS 'Beetle03'
1st 34/9 (3.78)
2nd 33/16 (2.06)
3rd 31/23 (1.35)
4th 29/30 (0.967)
5th 30/39 (0.769)
3.389 final

EBF 'Bora01'
1st 34/9 (3.78)
2nd 33/16 (2.06)
3rd 31/23 (1.35)
4th 29/30 (0.967)
5th 30/39 (0.769)
3.389 final

So you will be fine.
Where are you based as you have nada in your location :(

Hi Bob

Can you get to Ipswich to collect it ?

if you can you can have it for free (Bargain as i payed £200)
mainly as it will be an Ar**ache to post :)

That will make it worth travelling to collect as it will cost you about £40 to get here and back in diesel if your car still works.

Box is worth nothing to me when it's in my way ;)

Hi Rick, yes that's not a problem. That's extremely kind, I'm sure we can come to some mutual arrangement in some way. I'll talk to my garage to double check its gonna fit. I'm sure you are right though. PM me your details and i'll be in touch later on, I have to shoot out now. Thanks again!
