If I get con rods done, what else is needed/advisable/desirable?

Can anyone help? I'm an utter noob when it comes to engine internals.

I have been told that I may need a new turbo in the not too distant future, so that may as well be a hybrid or maybe big turbo.

Now I understand that the con rods are like toffee, so I was thinking of having them done. I have an Audi/VW mechanic that does cash work, and he has suggested these bits:

Connecting rods
Head gasket
Head bolts
Big end bearings (check and replace if needed)
Crank (check and replace if needed)

Is there anything else to think about? Its an AMK lump with 80k on it.
Cheers!

Head gasket
Cam cover gasket
VVT gasket set
Head bolts
Rifle Drilled rods
Big end shells (replace, do not reuse)
No need to buy a new crank
Rings... light hone of the bores for a deglaze, gap rings and run in..

Cam belt
Water pump
Tensioner pulley
Tensioner damper

Gaskets for anything else you remove like the turbo, oil and water lines etc... if its got a gasket or a seal and you remove it, replace it... it will only bite you in the ****...

Cheers Tuffty mate.

So is it basically an engine health check and rebuild?

If you are gonna do it then do it right IMO... I have paid the price of not doing all mine at the same time but its worth doing tbh...

Makes sense TBH. Would you be able to think of a ball park figure for the parts only, from your experience?

Millions.....!!!

:)

Rings can be the most expensive bit but there are places where you can get rings cheaper from what I have seen but I'll have a stab...

Head gasket (elring) - 25
Cam cover gasket - 16
VVT gasket set (genuine) - 5
Head bolts (genuine or elring) - 30
Rifle Drilled rods - dunno... Bill has these in stock though
Big end shells (replace, do not reuse) - 60 to 80? Bill has calico performance shells in
Rings... VAG ones are 30-40 per piston

Cam belt - 15?
Water pump 30 ish (exchange typically)
Tensioner pulley - can't remember
Tensioner damper - around 40 ish

All prices are approximate and maybe a little on the low side on occasion as I do get trade prices but if you source from a combo GSF/ECP and Dealer/TPS then you should get a fair price...

Forgot to mention, oil and filter plus some G12 coolant

<tuffty/>

Blimey, so quick tot up is £900 ish, counting £395 for the rods, £35 for the tensioner pulley, and £100 for oil, filter and G12.

Wow, so realistically this is looking to be a £2k job pretty quick, unless I get very handy with the spanners!

This is what I was thinking nogmeister, labour intensive and a killer on the pocket, the only way I could warrant this is if my cam belt and water pump was due!

May as well get a new drive/accessories belt too and dont forget get a new clutch & slave cylinder because the stock one wont last long on the hybrid/BT.

Single mass flywheel and clutch done last year, but defo a good shout mate cheers

I posted a thread up somewhere with all the prices, quick search should reveal it.

Bill does an all in fitting price which is very reasonable, give him a shout :)

Lifted from this thread.

I guess it is cheap if you don't have to spend the money on other things

Obviously this is a fairly comprehensive list and certain items may not be requried or could be obtained elsewhere for a bit cheaper. It still gives a rough idea of what's needed and the cost though for anybody else considering it

Apart from Yohans list, where it might get missed, nobody seems to have mentioned an oil pump.

If you're pulling it all apart, I'd say a new oil pump is fairly essential.
