When i open the bonnet and the engine is running, there is a "loud" ticking noise on the left. Does anybody know what this is?

The ticking noise, as long as it's not too loud, is normal on the S3.

assuming its not something faulty and you mean on the left as you stand in front of your car, its probably the charcoal filter - on the left by the water bottle - noisy ticking sound, when engine is hot (but no, I dont know what a charcoal filter is)

Of course if you are worried stop by an Audi dealer and get them to listen

I`ve had this happen on mine too, only when really hot though..... nothing to worry about but like Dunc said if your worried get it checked out by the Audi dealer /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue_out.gif

A3 Engine

I had the same question a while back, if you put your finger on top of the box above the (23) in the diagram and you can feel a ticking then its the charcoal filter. Its perfectly normal on a 1.8T engine according to my local dealer.
