Hi, I've had A3 1.8t sport yr-2000 for about a week now. Drove the car a hunderd miles+ today all was fine until a long (1 mile) downhill section of road made the engine light come on...it has stayed on since, just wonder if this is a known fault??
Whilst driving down this road the car was in 5th gear but I applied NO accelerator...could this have fooled the engine system??

cheers

Steve

needs code reading first? then let us know what codes you get?

Coasting a car downhill in gear won't cause damage. The fuel injectors will switch off, but the spark plugs will keep sparking. Is the engine light still on after you switched the car off and back on?

Yep, the light is still on....where's best place to get a code reader...Halfords??

Info about code readers etc is in the thread in the stickies... has all the stuff you need to know about checking for fault codes, links to sites to get info and the kit etc..

Its the one called 'IMPORTANT! - When posting asking for help... - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING (UPDATED)'

thats just the engine faults...

Just had (3 weeks ago) new cambelt fitted + metal water pump, new v belt, new breather hoses, oil sump removed pick up cleaned out, new filter and oil level sensor.
New starter motor...and new brake caliper, discs and pads all rounds...recon abs system.
Any help much appreciated:ohmy:

Thanks for advice, I cleared all faults and have been driving a with no problems, then engine light came on but car running ok...but not purring. Im new to a3 so have nothing to compare the general running of it.

looks like you have a boost leak, what dump valve have you got fitted? is it a genuine one? and looks like you may have an issue with your cam and or crank sensor dude

cheers, how do I test check dump valve..can i use vcds to monitor a drive ??
If the cam belt has been fitted wrong would the car run ok...wife drives every day and says it runs alright. How can I check this problem...

thanks for reply pal.

Cheers, presume these sensors don't give wrong readings then by your replies, I'll probably show vcds readings to garage hope its not damaged the engine driving it. Hope they are not going to charge me for the job to correct either.

thanks for the advice

steve

Garage took car in to have a look at the timing, after I suggested the timing was out. I gave them a printout of the ross-tech fault code plus diagram of the correct timing belt positon. Fair play to the garage, they found it was half a tooth out and put the job right, no charge.
Makes me wonder how many poeople might be driving round with an incorrectly fitted cam belt, the car ran ok, the engine light came on because of a different fault, so without Vagcom, this website and you guys, I might never have known.

cheers for replies...mpg might go up a little now:yahoo:

cam belt can't be half a tooth out dude, 1 tooth yeah, half a tooth, no...

Glad you got it sorted though
