I have started picking up parts here n there and have sourced myself the kit to retro fit the RNS-D sat nav.
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1355781468.719043.jpg

Still waiting for some of the wiring and other parts to arrive before I start.
But an wondering if anyone would be interested in a build thread / how too on it?

Also have to say a massive thank you to ScottB5 for his technical help with this in my preparation.

But looks so much better than a Tomtom stuck in windscreen. Plus I intend to get more function out of it.

    Thanks Scott
I haven't received the wiring yet so not sure what I will be short of. But I will definitely bare it in mind.

I'm interested in adding something like that raspberry Pi. Just not sure how it operates. I've never seen one working so don't know what the OS is like or what can use it for.

Get it up and running first and then look at things like that.

Hopefully get some nice weather tomorrow or Friday to fit brakes and have a test fit if this lot.

Full write up still to follow. But quick update.

I have been out tonight and taken out the old centre dash section and rough fitted the new.
All gone in nicely and nav tested. No gps aerial yet so can't test that. It powers up fine once I linked the safe cable. (Thanks Scott for the heads up on that one)
Climate Control all works fine too

Hopefully tomorrow I will get time to final fit and complete photos for write up

    Next project lined up.

All done now. So here is the promised write up.
I will expand it once I get the additional parts such as TMC & Tuner.

    Tools needed:
T25 torx driver (short shaft is best)
    Torch
Stereo release keys (4 if fitting a nav unit)

    Steps:
    1) Remove both side under dash panels by removing the two screws underneath and the screws behind the dash end trims.

    2) Remove old stereo and trim piece around hazard switch
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1356037833.219077.jpg
    Slide out climate control unit.
You will now see all the torx screws to be removed.

    3) Remove the 2 screws at the top, 4 on the front and also there are 2 on either side near the back of the trim.
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1356037981.518900.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1356037993.601968.jpg

    4) The trim will now pull forward allowing you to disconnect the electrical connections and remove.

    5) This will now reveal the inner cage which is held in my a screw either side.
Remove the screws and the cage will lift out.
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1356038193.135465.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1356038202.035399.jpg

    6) Now it's just a case of fitting new double din parts in reverse of the above.

    7) Once you have refitted all the dash panels you will be ready to install the nav unit.
I have not got an aerial yet but when it comes it will be fitted up inside the dash.
One thing to note on the install is that the RNS-D required a 'safe' feed wire.
This was simply a wire linked from the permanent live to the safe connection as shown on the wiring sticker
On mine it was the red and white cable linked into the plug hole next to it.

    Notes:
Don't tighten the new inner cage until you have lined up the outer trim.
When fitting the outer trim locate the base first and it will go back in a lot easier.

    Finished result
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1356038332.918748.jpg

All in all it is not a difficult or long job.
It's taken me about two hours and I have done that in the dark (only spare time I could get)

If you have any questions or would like extra help just let me know.

For the safe wire it was jumped from the red and white wire on the left of the photo into the hole to its immediate right.

    Nicely don't that man.

Are you going to go for tuner B and 2 AV inputs?

You'll have to let me know how you get on with the satnav side of thongs, mines still not 100% but that's either down to a faulty unit or missing wires since mine is from a 8L.

I'm still waiting to get the other parts from Pat.
Not 100% certain what he has and is sending.
I haven't got an antennae yet so not able to test it fully yet.

I have still got to have a look to see:
    A) which software version it's running
    B) see how to eject map cd so can see if newer version available.

Hoping to get a TMC and at least some kind of av input plus iPod input.
    So still plenty to do.

where are you going to put the antennae?
my sat nav isnt working anymore and i suspect its the antenae - it ws suggested to me to just but a new puck type antenae and stow it away behind the dash somewhere rather than try and fix the one on the roof

Get a puck one and shove it behind the clocks.
That's what I done and it works really.

If you really want a new antenna I got a spare one roof one but for the price of that you can by a new puck one.

Antenna behind the clocks is sufficient. Never have a problem with my RNS-E Sat Nav.

    Impressive stuff and great install.

Just curios as to how good the sat nav function is?

For example I've just got a new Via 135 which is brilliant, gives me traffic updates with no subscription and due to an offer I have guaranteed latest map for life for free. No that I use them much yet but it can also be used as a handsfree and be controlled via voice control.

My other grumble on the OEM sat navs is having to take your eyes away from the road all the time to check the map/directions.

Great job btw mate, you seem to have achieved exactly what i am trying to do...

Just another quick question as you guys seem to be on the topic of antennas.

I have the trip computer style satnav pictured below, and wonder whether the Arial that is on my car for radio and stuff will work for the RNS-D satnav when i get it, as it is a GPS arial.

I've never seen a Satnav set up like yours mate.
So I am struggling to help you but if you can get me some images of the Navigation box wiring and any diagrams I'll see what I can do.
