    Lower tie arm snapped whilst driving

    Driving home earlier, drove around a corner and over a grate to hear a ding followed by a massive drift. Thought it must be ice on the road. Carried on driving but the car started to snake so stopped pulled over.

    They will be fine mate, you also need to look at changing the bushs in the hub, they seize up and thats what causes the tie arm to snap, audi have done a revised part that stops this from happeneing, have a search on here for rear hub bushes, if you cant rind it ill post the part number when im back home tomorrow.

    Don't think so as once its jacked up, everything seems to line up as it falls back into place. Watching it get dragged onto an aa recovery truck with the wheel like that made me massively cringe and feel slightly sick ha. If the suspension is damaged and now the fact ill get adjustable tie bars, what an excuse to upgrade the springs and shocks anyhow

    Ill check tomorrow.

    You need to be getting the rear diff checked after that mate, something like that can cause serious issues, make sure you or a garage give it a proper looking over and make sure nothing else has been affected.

    If your in standard suspension you don't really need adjustable tie arms . I got a full set (4 arms) including bushes, nuts and bolts etc for around £90. Although its a good investment if your considering going lower in the future.

    Damn the UK is hard on cars eh? Salt on the roads, the cold etc. Must be worse for these rose joints too. Luckily all 4 of mine were free moving (but uber stiff).

    Gone with a used oem tie bar just to get the car back on the road for now. Will upgrade when or if I sort the suspension out and of cause save some money.

    What are those ebay tie arms like on the first post ? might get them not a bad price. I need to sort my rear end ASAP my creaking of the seized rose joints has got worse with all this bad weather, and my car is lowered so I need them really

    Mine did this on the revised part aswell, was totall shocked years back when I was driving 5mph over a hump in road & it went, problem was the bearing cage cracked on that side, so as said check the rear drive to be sure no other damage.

    so the car has been repaired today, mechanic said the rose joint hadn't seized and was fine but the other end was a nightmare to remove. new tie arm seems to have sorted the camber from -2 to 0 from looking at it.
    no damage to report other the than the arb had popped off somewhere but is fine now.
    taken it out for a spin tonight just to check everything and i now have fwd :-( what should i be checking?

    Check the earth strap to the haldex.. if no joy come up on saturday for a scan...(assuming you have not got VCDS?)

    Needa scanning mate but from something like that it could have damaged the diff, haldex unit etc.

    Any is ok, bottom ones are easier to replace than top, I would say bottom is the more popular position, since it's easier access, and usually the ones to snap off!

    so a bit of an update, Dave scanned the car for me and it came back with the following code

    01155 - Clutch

    04-10 Mechanical Malfunction - Intermittent.

    had a search around various forums with out a conclusive diagnosis. some people have changed the precharge pump to fix this issue, I don't think its that. Others have had to replace the haldex and diff, this seems more plausible due to the strain the tie bar snapping will have placed on the diff.

    anybody have any experience with this fault code and what did you do to fix it?

    my stepdad is a recovery driver and I remember when the 8l was not far off new I was with him picking 1 up with a broken tie bar, as he pulled it on to the back of the wagon, the other side snapped as well. I don't fancy 1 braking on me thanks.

    Same thing happened to me late Friday on the M54, luckily I was only doing 60mph when it gave way! Bloody exciting couple of seconds holding on to the steering wheel!
    Have had to have it recovered to my in laws house 120 miles away in North Wales, but they have no local garage in their village.

    I have ordered a pair of KW adjustable replacements as the car is lowered 30mm and will have to install them with the car on axle stands, but as I didn't have any tools with me I could check what size tools I would need, so does anyone know what size sockets and spanners I will need? Also as I can't get it aligned straight away should I temporarly set them up to the same measurement as the opposite side. (Using a tape measure)

    Just a quick update to this thread, having come to the conclusion the diff was damaged, i've had it looked at on a ramp today and the driveshaft was damaged at the cv end causing the shaft to spin freely as it had worn smooth. 1 new driveshaft later i now have power to all 4 wheels again. :-)
