Ill try... I have a mental note not to use different compression ratio pistons or anything else from left field this time....

Although that did work out well to be fair which is astounding!

I have NO idea, I'm 150 miles from home, stuck at work until some time next week, wanting to go home and drive my car some more so I can put enough miles on it to attend the B5 RR day.

I'm awfully proud of your choice to name it Rumble, so many excellent rhyming words

    Anyway....

The turbo has arrived. Well, the turbo and manifold have. Sadly they didn't remember the external wastegate - however 2 out of 3 isn't bad.

Turbo - initial impressions? Massive. Much bigger than expected. Now have my concerns about physical fitment behind the engine. Anyway, that remains to be seen. Housings look good, comp wheel is pretty sizeable, as is the turbine.

V band outlet is just a Garrett 5 bolt adapter which is handy. It is also internally gated with a 1 bar actuator. Wastegate channel is small and would almost certainly creep is it were used.

Manifold looks pretty good actually, typically Chinese though. 4 port merge collector should flow pretty good and the runners aren't exactly long which should help keep lag down.

Has come with a V band to match the housing, and a clamp. All the gaskets and bolts as well. On the whole, not bad for 320 sheets. However that is very much dependent on how long the turbo lasts!

    Awesome!

I have left over bits you can have dude,
Pretty sure I never picked up that box of 312 parts, if I did I still have it somewhere which is a full front set up and discs.
B5 Rs4 front brakes, complete set, not that they'll fit easily.
I also have a pair of Corbeau bucket seats knocking about with crappy subframes that you can have on the cheap bud

God knows where that box of 312 bits is dude, but thats a very good point. I forgot all about them. Will ask the olds where they stashed them!

Those seats sound good - give me a call if you get 5 later on.

    Thanks Dane, much love

    OK, more photos today.

Mock fitment of the turbo and manifold. In typical Chinese style, the head flange isn't flat... Fortunately I know someone who knows someone who has a REALLY big grinding wheel that can sort that out.

The combination of the turbo and manifold is large though... fit is going to be tight. Very tight.

10 inches clearance required behind the engine... Hmmm. The Actuator which is fitted here won't be on there fortunately giving more room.

Thoughts at this point - the turbo is absolutely 100000% going to need supporting from beneath. The thing weighs a ton and there is no way that manifold will hold that thing up for long under duress without cracking.

The manifold also needs skimming flat, and trimming along the top to make a snug fit to the head.

To be fair, the turbo looks 'something' around GT3071 size. Far larger than a) I wanted and b) anticipated. But bugger it, it's here now!

The way this turbo is going to be fitted is this:

The V Band turbine housing is sh*te. Too small, and has the wastegate penny valve built into it for some reason. That's being removed as it's only a bolt on jobber. You can see it below, bolted to the housing:

That's going to be binned. End of. The hole for the internal wastegate channel will then be welded up using a penny washer or something along those lines.

Bill somehow knew where I could get a flange to use for the downpipe which mates to the bolt pattern so the downpipe, et voila. Hot side sorted.

Actuator need removed and the housing needs clocking to suit. After that all I need is a working engine to bolt it to.... yay!

So, got to work yesterday evening sorting the turbo out as above.

V Band adapter removed - no need to weld up the wastegate channel - a finger seems to work well...

    Inside the comp housing:

The comp wheel in all it's glory...

Put it back together clocked correctly, with the actuator removed and the Turbine ready for a downpipe to be made .... yay :-).

Those who aren't friends of mine on Facebook may not have seen me scrabbling for change for some JOM coilovers...

£135 odd quid which isn't far off. Coilovers will be ordered today.

External wastegate also turned up today:

Small - it is not. Has come with all appropriate flanges and gaskets etc. On the whole, for £320 delivered this stuff really isn't bad. OK, it needs a bit of work, and the turbo is a bit suspect, but lets be fair.... it looks good. lol

    Engine work begins tomorrow....

I've talked with Dan and he has suggested some suitable upgrades for it... BUT, I've decided just to whap this one straight on the genuinely test the out of the box reliability. That was sort of one of the points of the exercise.

I am planning to buy another identical turbo and send that one down to Dan. He can work his magico and then it will be my spare.

    Whatever floats your boat.

That turbo is big though, should power the new a3 track car to victory in the battle between you and Prawn. Just needs some Brembo's to stop it the other end..

What is happening with the engine in the car at the moment, is it completely dead or salvageable?

Not initially planning on using one on 440s, will check the OEM pump's output pressure.

It's on the list of to do's, however not on the initial build.

I did miss off AFR gauge though.
