Unhappy Road noise from new tyres?

Hi, I had 2 new Kumho tyres fitted on the front the other day along with a MOT. The car passed fine with no issues and the new tyres were fitted which were ordered from Blackcircles.

As soon as I left the garage I had a constant whine coming from I thought, the front nearside wheel. As soon as I got on a stretch of road and picked up speed the whining noise got louder and faster with the speed of the engine. The noise continues even around corners and whilst travelling in neutral, so probably not bearings or gearbox. Haldex is recently serviced with oil and filter as well.

Thought had to be tyres, so I turned around and went back to the garage. Guy checked them over and the nearside one was on backwards!! So had that put right and assumed the noise would go. Nope!

Spoke to Blackcircles and they say there's nothing they can do once tyres are on the car. They told me that its probably just road noise and may fade when the tyres are worn. Useless idiots.

Could the garage have damaged something whilst it was having the MOT? Wish I'd kept my old tyres now, as they wern't that bad

    Any ideas guys?

Kumho aren't exactly a premium brand, so you can't realistically expect premium performance ..of which, less road noise is a perk.

To test your chassis, rotate the new tyres to the back & see if the noise follows.

...in your opinion maybe! it's subjective & particular to each individual ...personally I'm not partial to tyre squeal on roundabouts at anything under 30mph.

the advice is still good! rotate the tyres.

No really, they make epic tires.

Kumho are a huge sponsor in motorsport and are the regulation tire in the majority of regulated series. You guy's just haven't got a clue what you're on about because you've probably never had a decent set. (sorry Chez )

Ecsta SPT KU31'a are an awesome tire, their slick and semi slick tires are world class as are their rally and cross tires.

Yes the advice is good, but it really grates me when people slate products that they don't know about.

And yes, I would have a Kumho over a Conti, Dunlop or Pirelli when compared price for price.

*Also, lol at your petty attempt at trying to undermine me by correcting my spelling. When actually neither of us are wrong and you just look like a bellend.

as you know i have a derv estate car for children, pets and shopping so dont really feel the need for slicks or semi slicks! if i did i would just run my toyos down until slicks!
but i am not here to argue! life is too short!

The fact is, I've had Kumho's before & say they're cheap & nasty Tat.

Slicks & Semi-Slicks for the road in the winter months? Get a clue. Lucozade sponsored the Olympics, doesn't mean the Athletes drink it does it?

Your spelling is the American version, are you American - No! so you spelled it wrong & as you pointed out, I fixed it on your behalf Knobby. Get used to having your mistakes corrected by others if you're going to insist on spewing crap.

I've run KU31's on the Audi, and they're alright. They're nothing like "epic" when compared to my current Eagle F1's though, The Eagles are a much better tyre.

Comparing Slicks and Semi-slicks to road tyres is somewhat meaningless as well. Toyos R888's are an excellent semi-slick, but their road tyre offerings arent that great when compared with the best on the market.

Having said all that, its somewhat unusual for a tyre to whine. They often can rumble a bit and produce generic "noise", but an actual whine? I wouldnt have thaught so.

Oh squeeze my nipples, you seem like a right cockeral. You've just reminded me why I love this forum.

If you had a clue about tires then you would never have said anything so stupid, so don't give me the spewing crap line. Because by the looks of it you're the one who doesn't know what they're going on about.

The "fact" that you've had some cheap tires before doesn't mean you have a valid opinion on an entire companies products; it means you have a valid opinion on the one set of Kumho tires that you have had. I bet you can't even remember which one they were.

"Lucozade sponsored the Olympics, doesn't mean the Athletes drink it does it?" simply lol. That statement alone shows the grasp you have on this discussion.

Kumho are the largest supplier of regulation tires in the entire motorsport industry and their road tires are also great quality.

So get back in your hole, and take your second hand forum hero reviews elsewhere.

*And Kev, nobody compared Kumho's slicks to their road tires. Or if they did then it wasn't me, and it wasn't in this thread.

FFS guys..........get a grip.....its like a creche in here. Everyone is entitled to their opinion whether it be right or wrong but then again and opinion can never be wrong.

I had the top of the range Kumhos on my last S3.........reason I bought them wasnt that they were cheap. It was the fact that they had a better review than the majority of all the top of the range tyres at the time. And IMO they were very good especially in the wet.

Tyre reviews, tests and ratings | the online tyre guide

I go by this guide when choosing tyres AND also ask for opinons but when I can get 4 slightly cheaper tyres that out-rate some top end tryes then its a no-brainer for me.

And before anyone states thats mental or Im off my head or thats dangerous............I always bed my tyres in and don't drive like I stole it straight away with fresh rubber on.

Am i missing something, isnt a backwards directional tyre an MOT failure and should it have been spotted and fixed before passing the mot?

Again, if you can tell me which model of tire they were then I'll be amazed. You cannot judge an entire company's products based on a single encounter with one of their products that you probably don't even remember the name of.

That's like me saying that Audi's are crap because I once drove an A2 and it wasn't very good.

You'd be surprised at the new rating system that's coming out on tyres a bit like house energy ratings that possibly a lot of you may not of seen yet with not being in the motor trade perhaps. Kumhos for wet grip are scoring Bs all round which is the second highest. Higher than/on a par with some dunlops and other premium brands. Some of you may even consider toyos better than kumhos when infact the typical t1r well known model is scoring a D or an E in wet weather driving, can't remember 100%.

We sell kumhos as the main bulk of our tyres sales in my dealership due to being cheap and a fair quality tyre. Road noise isn't just down to how cheap or expensive a tyre is either. The Vw touran I delivered parts in for 6 months had bridgestones fitted and they were noisy and harsh. Having driven on cheaper brands I can say some of those give a nicer ride.

The Goodyears I put on not 2 months ago had the new ratings - they are A rated... but what do I know, maybe B rated are better.

It would be useful yes, if you think you are entitled to telling the whole forum that something isn't very good then it would be handy to know what it actually is. Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but what you guys are saying is in no way helpful.

My days of arguing with you are over, you never seem to get the point.

Quote Originally Posted by Artimus View Post

As Jason says, the rating can be funny. The first ratings on tires were linked to economy, rolling resistance, water clearance and stopping times. No thought about the lateral grip or "performance" of the tires.

Eagle F1's are good tires, how do you find the progression of grip? I drove a Clio 182 with these fitted and the grip was very much all then nothing. Other than that I couldn't fault them on a slippery morning thrashing cross the moors. I wouldn't say they were better than the Exalto PE2's that mine had though, for that chassis they are perfect.

To go back to my original point though, if I mentioned Vredestein tires you guys would doubtlessly say that they are **** too because they make some of the cheapest tires going; but the Ultrac Vorti is one of the highest reviewed tires about at the moment and wipes the floor with your Eagle F1 A2 by all accounts. They are a company who make an entire range of tires and it is narrow minded (and frankly what I would expect of ASN members) to brand their entire range as **** based on one of their offerings. Just because it isn't as good as your £200 a corner Eagles?

You can pull out your poncy "my tires were £200 a corner" ********, but in the real world next to nobody cares. This bloke might just roll to work and back in a smart Audi; he might not give a flying **** about your asymmetric fancy arse tires.

Tires like the Kumho Ecsta ASX or KU31 are more than on a par with the Toyo T1R's and Federal FK452 that a lot of people swear by on the 8L chassis. And if the OP had of said he's fitted either of those two tires you wouldn't have told him his tires are ****.

Of course A is the best and its pretty much what i put..and said Kumho`s were scoring B`s which is the SECOND best rating. So why put something sarcastic like the above? I said they`re better than SOME premium tyres.

Dunlops SP Sports are C water clearance, Uniroyal Rainsport 2`s are a B, Pirelli Pzero Rosso`s are a C, Michelin Primacy are a B just as a few examples.

seems the usual person is always right, i am sure this chap cried last time and got me banned, everything he says is correct !!

my post is aimed at getting a response on what tyres he had on his cars when he binned them and i also showed that a car with 500/500 has no problem using gyef1's, they are rated highly among high powered car users

i have had hands on experience with kuhmo tyres, they were terrible even when compared with a set of low medium avons

Everything Klappe posts isn't correct, mine are though

A number of factors could result in binning a car,I wouldn't base it all on them.

I whole heartedly believe you & didn't post it for your benefit! The point is, I knew superKumhoman above you would find a way to rubbish the new rating system & put his preference back on top - which is pretty much what he did... a B rating is somehow still better than an A in his world ...and at only £113 a corner, I made a huge saving on his estimate too.

How's the noise rating on those Kumho's anyway - which is the whole point of this thread.

74db vs 70-72 of most premium tyres. Other budget brands usually start from 72/73 from quickly looking earlier

So the Kumho's are noisey... Thanks for clearing that up

About a month ago I put a set of Goodyear 4Season tyres on the mrs. Polo, it's gone from being very quiet, to sounding like a bearing's gone - so I know well that tyres can make a big difference when it comes to noise! I kept them because we live on a hill that is rarely gritted & need at least one of the cars to be able to climb out when\if it snows.

lol at the replies. The more I hear it the more I think wheel bearing, but I wont know till I get it jacked up tomorrow. I did try making a sound recording earlier but its not amazing, have a listen, gets louder when I come of the gas. Lol priceless, I love this thread.

    Right here's my 2p!

I'm lucky enough to have a best friend who owns a tyre company. IMO the time I had my s3 8l the best tyres I put on mine were bridgestone potenza re050a, they were better than the Pirelli zeros Nero rosso before them and the conti sp3 before them.
However on my civic type r and my focus st225 I couldn't beat Goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric 2's on the front and bridgestone potenza re050a on the rear. I've played a lot with tyres and combinations of manufacturers on my cars and the right tyres do make a massive difference ! Good tyres are expensive but are worth every penny. Everyone has a favourite I know but you can't put kumho in the same league as Pirelli pz , bridgestone potz, conti sp3.

Hi, got the car jacked up earlier. The rear wheels have no movement at all. But the fronts both have a slight bit of movement, is this normal? Its not a lot but they are both the same, doubt both wheel bearings would have gone so I'm guessing its normal. So should I buy new tyres?

Turns out it was the Kumho tyres! Something to do with the tread having wide gaps and cheaper directional tyres not being as good according to the tyre pro at my local garage. Anyway, had some Michelin Pilots put on and the whining noise disappeared. Had a less loud whining from the rear which could only be heard with the parcel shelf out, turns out that is also due to not having great tyres on the back. Cant remember the make but they where fairly cheapish and are only silent with 40psi, but below that they make the noise. Fronts have 32psi btw.

Looks like our cars don't like cheap tyres! Lesson learnt!

Thanks for the update! I might try more pressure in the Goodyear's on the Polo to see if that calms them down too.
