Alarm problem

My dad has just bought a 52 plate Quattro Sport TDi, everything is great but the alarm keeps going off, the pictogram on the dash shows the drivers door is open but it isn't. What is inside the door that tells the alarm whether it's open or closed?

A micro switch is built-in to the lock, they wear out, change the lock...

Ta, the garage we bought it from have said to take it and get it fixed and send them the bill.

You dont necessarily need to replace the whole lock mechanism, have a search for microswitch, i carried out a fix and it did the trick a couple of years ago.
