valve cover gasket sealnt

ok i want to replace my gasket where do i put sealant?
after i install the gasket or before?

You only need to put a small mount of sealant on the four areas where the grooved channel of the can chain tensioner and the front cam cap meet the flat of the head... I also smear a little into the half moon recess as this is one of the first areas to leak when the gasket gets a little hard..

ya i know where to put but my Q is do i put the sealant on the gasket or under the gasket ?
