    Replacement Clutch

    Hi,
    I have a 2000 S3. After 75k the clutch needs to be replaced. Apparently the bearings need replacing and therefore the clutch. I live in London and am being quoted just over £1,000 all in for a new clutch. New flywheel would be an extra £600.

    Flywheel replacement price seems reasonable but new clutch price of £1,000 seems very high, especially as this quote isn't from a dealer.

    Can anyone offer their advice on this and/or where I could get it fixed more cheaply.

    Where in London are you ? It would be worth trying find a garage that will let you supply your own parts, at the moment eurocarparts.com are doing 31% off till Sunday, I needed aload of things doing to mine brakes etc and sourced the parts from eurocarparts and getting a local garage to fit saving me alot overall. From what I know though clutch and clutch work on the A3 is labour intensive so not cheap to do.

    Ive seen this lot online vwaudicars.co.uk near uxbridge they seem to quote £50 per hr plus VAT for labour but Ive not used them myself or even been there but they seemed efficent when I called. The garage I am using is in Ruislip he is £55 per hr plus VAT, there garage isnt big just really an big shed behind the shops but he was recommended to me and have had him do a few things for now on my A3 1.8T and Ive been very happy, and he saved me alot of £ after I went to stealer who said I needed x, y and z but didnt really need it.

    From my experience there are a few indi VW, Audi garages in London that are charging the same as main dealers if not more in some cases.

    I would highly reccomend IGS in Eastleigh just off the M3, about and hour and a bit from London. 52 quid an hour labour. Too busy to have time to be ripping people off! Porsche and VAG specialist who i used to use to service my S4 and others..

    Sixteen hundred for a clutch kit and flywheel? Wow!
    Get the parts yourself via one of the suppliers like TPS, Europarts etc. or go to reputable VAG specialist and order the parts through them and get em to fit, but whatever you do; DO NOT USE A STEALER.
    I paid under three hundred quid + labour for an uprated VR6/G60 plus bits through my Porker specialist. All I had to was find the correct part numbers. For the life of Brian I can't see an s3 kit being that much more tbh.

    I forgot to add my bill was around half of what you have been quoted and this included a cambelt/waterpump kit, again the work was carried out by a Porker specialist. So in a nutshell, you're getting your pants pulled down Mate.

    Still thinks it's too much to shell out for a unwarranted car that is getting on a bit, so common sense tells me there no need to pay top prices for this type of work. I don't want to sound overly patronising, but if one wants a fair price, then expect to put in some legwork; ask family, work colleagues, mates etc for reputable mechanics. You may even get away without paying vat which alone will cut a huge chunk off the final bill.

    Sure. The huge irritation with this clutch issue is that I am in the process of trying to buy a new car and was about to sell it. Clutch only started playing up 6 weeks ago grr. I've always looked after the car very well but it appears to be kicking me in the goolies as I say a fond farewell.

    I've already asked vwaudicars.co.uk to quote for it as per MingeBlue's tip off. They've already indicated that this quote is very expensive, as have APS who I used to take my car to when I lived near them

    Damn, I feel your pain. Best plan is source the required parts yourself, which require a little looking here and the web for the part numbers and getting the work done via mates rates.#see my previous post. Put it this way, if I was buying your car I wouldn't be concerned who did the work long as you had the paper proof that you used reputable VAG parts.

    What engine / box is it? If your only looking to sell the car, why not find a second hand DMF and clutch from a broken car? I have one i just stripped from my a3 tdi sport, its the 240mm type. The DMF was starting to knock, but not too bad, if your cars stock it might get you out of trouble. I paid a guy called adam on gti mk4 website, dont know his user name, £90 to fit my new clutch and flywheel. Took him 3-4 hours tops and it on his drive in the dark!

    For a comparison, i fitted a helix fast road and solid fllywheel, £850inc vat for parts. My local specialist quoted £250 labour to fit them.

    I went this route as the car is mapped.

    Awesome were willing to pricematch labour, but i didnt want them to fit a techniclutch!

    The garage that gave the very expensive quote in north west London does it have R and a few S's in the name and sound like muscles ?

    I went to them a few years back for a service, the estimated bill I got back for things they said needed doing was large, I left there more in a state of shock than a happy customer. I was told that 'this was the list of things that needed doing to avoid not having to come back to them with problems' which I suppose is fair enough to a point but mine was a car worth may be £3k. I never bothered going back, someone else was also talking to me on Saturday about a high quote they had for some work and it turns out it was these guys again. The area they operate in isn't cheap rent wise, though it may look it (same as most of NW london ) so may be its that and the workshop is big so again he has to cover that, but either way I went once and would not use again there are cheaper places

    @MingeBlue - well it's funny you mention that. 2 years ago I took my car to them for an MOT, service and new set of brakes (pads and discs, front and rear). They rang me back and listed a litany of other issues they had found. The vast majority of them I went ahead with and duly handed over £2,500. Erk!! 6 months ago a coilpack failed. I took it to them and was told that the other 3 were old and should be replaced. They also discovered a rocker gasket leak and a worn NSF ball joint. And then this week after handing the car over for an MOT, service and clutch investigation I get not only a replacement clutch requirement but, yet another list of issues that need addressing. It's worth mentioning that I have done less than 10,000 miles over this last 2 years yet seem to have rung up an impressive list of issues.

    My car is certainly fairly old (2000) and things do go wrong, and I would not call into question this garage's workmanship but one cannot fail to see a theme developing here.

    Unfortunately I've decided I just don't have confidence in them any more and am going to take my current car elsewhere.

    Any recommendations (over and above those already mentioned) gratefully received as I need to move on this ASAP.

    Replacement Clutch

    I can vouch for the awesome GTI kit. Really please with the pedal feel and drivability on the SMF. I fitted it myself though so can't comment on labour. If you're around London I'd recommend 4Rings in Dartford to fit it.

    VAG parts are made by LuK... the parts that came off mine were exactly the same except for a VAG part number and 4 rings logo...

    ...and I am using them (albeit with a Sachs paddle plate) on my car with nearly 400hp... so they do work... Westy's clutch seems a good buy too...

    aswesty said mate awesome gti's clutch kit is awesome its 480ft/lb torque rate so that will handle plenty and is cheaper then what you were qouted... i think its same day delivery or you get it the next day guarenteed just talk to Mike about it... great bloke

    labour shouldnt be too expensive i know its 400pounds in Sydney so cant be that bad there

    UPDATE

    So having been quoted big money for a replacment clutch (plus other work that allegedly needed doing) I decided to abort and take my car back from Russell Automotive. They did put the car through an MOT (insisting I replace the petrol filler cap for £26, something which I'd replaced 7 years ago and which had never been the source of an MOT failure???). They also charged me £75 for their clutch inspection. Basically that's an hour of their time. Not sure how they arrived at that but there you go.

    On the suggestion of MingeBlue (thanks by the way) I made contact with vwaudicars.co.uk in Hillingdon. I spoke to the main guy there called Martin who I instantly took a liking to. Honest, polite, straight talking and above all else customer focused and methodical. He suggested they have a look at the issues and report back. Given how my pedal wasn't returning when cold yet seemed fine when warm he was concerned at RA's suggestion to replace the entire clutch in the first instance without first investigating the master cylinder. They have now serviced the car, fitted a new master cylinder, cleaned the throttle body and fitted a new window lifter. All for under £600.

    I'm picking up the car tomorrow but as far as they can tell the clutch seems to now function perfectly. They haven't ruled out the possibility that the clutch might also need replacing but the logic of replacing the clutch and slave first seemed bizarre given the symptoms experienced. They have quoted me £700 for a fitted new clutch using OEM parts or £500 using Luk/Sacha. Very reasonable I thought and a far cry from £1,038 quoted by RA (OEM parts).


    Where I'm at now is that I've lost confidence in RA for 2 reasons. Firstly I'm not convinced they have approached the issues logically and a cynic would look very suspiciously at how they have arrived at their assessment. Personally I'm going to reserve judgment as if my clutch does worsen over the next few months their initial diagnosis would have been correct. So I'm not necessarily calling into question their skills or ability. However my second issue is with price and quite clearly they are expensive. They are nowhere near competitive in their pricing (having rung around) and I won't be returning to have any future work carried out. Audi cars are expensive to maintain in their own right, I don't need an expensive mechanic as well.

    I also can't help but feel that there is an appetite to encourage the customer to have as much work done as possible, regardless of how small the issue is. Having used RA several times over the last few years I feel I am justified in this view.

    Thanks to all of you for your help (especially MingeBlue), it's much appreicated.

    I can't recommend Martin at vwaudicars.co.uk enough, so if you're looking for a well priced committed company to look after your car, these are the kind of people to talk with.

    Small world! Just bought an 2008 A6 Avant from vwaudicars.co.uk. Martin seemed like a decent guy and I might take my s3 to him for a service in January. I took mine to GSF Motorworks in Battersea for the last service, but they bent me over. Also used Volks Autos who advertise on ASN in Sutton for a few things and they seem like they know what they're doing...

    If you are running uprated parts and power and fancy a sach six paddle racing clutch and dual mass flywheel...it's c.g.motorsport every time.

    Ask for Sally...she will do you a deal.

    Was looking at cg Motorsport last night. £180 for a stage 1 clutch for 25% extra over standard. 3 paddle clutch for 40% was £300 so still not bad.

    I paid about 160 quid for a clutch kit from eurocarparts and supplied a 2nd gearbox to be fitted. Labour was £400 from my local garage.

    Call them. Speak to the boss. They will negotiate. Say audisport.net etc...and that you have been recommended. Next day delivery and awesome bits of kit.
