    S3 Fitting Turbo

Think the garage has found my lack of boost and blowing exhaust, the turbo is hanging off the manifold....
Can they take it off and refit it without taking manifold off?

i have just changed my manifold to xs power, and i dont see how the turbo can come out without taking the mani off.
if your turbo is hanging off, why not just bolt it back up?
its only three bolts and quite easy to bolt on to a standard manifold, its no easy on a xs power one.
i have a spare cast audi mani with no cracks if needed just pm me

The turbo is easy to bolt back up to the Manni and get a new gasket in on the car...

as above mate, try bolting the turbo back to the mani first.
    its the cheapest option.
bolts a 2 quid each from tps or audi if i remember correctly.
if the garage is telling you the mani has to come off, ask why they cant just bolt it back up?
bolts sheared off? mani crack and so forth.
and then come back and let us know otherwise it could become quite expensive.

From what they are saying it appears there is a bolt missing on mani to head, so lets hope its not sheered or it will be head off

They have an habit of unscrewing themselves and popping out, maybe ask them to use nordlock washers when refitting?

Right ive spoke to Garage exhaust blowing problem is the fact the Turbo is hanging off, this would also be why there is no boost lol
Twice when ive booted it ive heard a pinging noise under the car like i have run over a bolt, this was probably the two turbo to manifold bolts making a run for it lol.....
He is going to get another gasket and the bolts and try bolting it back down and fingers crossed thats it sorted, he was saying the turbo holes are threaded or something like that so if they are knackered will need a new turbo.

Nordlock washers, ring bill at Badger 5. That will stop them working loose even if the threads are a little worn.

Worked wonders on my stretched K03.

    Labours free then?!

Its clear that your car has had some very unsympathetic owner/s, let's hope this isn't just the tip of the iceberg for you.

At least it seems to be in better hands now!

You say that Jason, a friend of mine paid £1000 for an immaculate 110k one owner from new pre facelift S3. The turbo smoked; he fitted a new K04 himself and has gone 11k in it since. The whole thing owes him less than £1300.

Price means nothing when measuring the quality of a car. If it's a dog it's a dog, regardless of price. I have seen right sheds up for £3/4000.

Interesting! What car do you rally and which events? Me and/or my mate might have got you off the startline somewhere? My mate also owns/crews one of the rescue units you'll see out and about.

It would be good to keep a running total of what you end up spending, I can't imagine there are any S3's out there that haven't had the common faults by now, and either had them fixed or are carrying them.

I purchased what I thought was a very good S3 for a good price earlier this year, but it has still needed circa £800 spending on it (all just parts) to get it to where it should be. I've actually spent more, but some was cosmetic work (alloy refurb etc), and not strictly necessary

Make sure you keep your garage in beers!

You can remove the turbo without taking the head off. I changed mine a few months ago by just removing the TIP and taking it out that way. Took me a little over an hour to remove and about 2 to fit.

The genuine Borg Warner K04s come with an insert. The insert goes into the large threaded hole, and then the bolt screws into the insert.

Chinese copies don't have these, you wind the bolt directly into the cast.

I have seen previously the insert wind out of the casting instead of the bolt coming out of the insert. Thats a pain.

New gasket and some new bolts and I'm sure it will be fine. Unusual for that the be the case though, normally they are impossible to undo due to heat.

That would suggest to me it's had something done recently by an amateur...

This car is immaculate apart from its running issues. Like showroom condition really.
