So here's the scene, liverpool city centre, the most dangerous and hostile place known to man, entering a carpark, barrier goes up, I set off and BOOM, clutch pedals goes to the floor. Anyway, manage first gear to a space, I've inspected the peddle itself (its been reinforced) and its not snapped, so must be slave cylinder has pood itself. Now I have a significant pool of fluid under the car, and can trace the drip to a hard line which comes from under the heatshielding at the back of the bay.
I know what's required to fix the ****er, but, how do I begin to make my way home???

I realise it could be dangerous, but I could also be shot or stabbed anyway so I guess I should prob try and drive it.
Opinions and advice please.

P.s. Superdad is on his way, not that its fixable right now but he may take the car to the garage.

Just run for your life, cars still going to be there when you come back with reinforcements

Sorry to hear it mate :(

Managed to drive mine with no clutch but was late at night with f all traffic, **** doing it in Liverpool with the stop starting etc

So looks like your stuck about to get stabbed raped or whatever.......was nice knowing you ;)

When this happened to me I had to get towed home :crying:

Hi,

This happened to me recently. My symptoms were - driving along, came to a round about, pulled away in first went to change to second and the pedal simply dropped to the floor.

I intially thought it was the clutch pedal but that was fine. I inspected the slave cylinder on the gearbox and that was fine too. After a bit more looking i found that there is a small resoviour mounted on the bulkhead of the car (just behind the turbo intake pipe). The resovoiur is a small circular metal block about 5cm across and 2cm deep, mine had started to lead/split at a joint and had let all of the clutch fluid out.
I would suggest you check that is section is ok and to me it seems a weak point in the clutch system.

My car was the other side of town and i drove it home. To move off put the car in first with the engine off, then turn it over on the key. The starter will effectivly jump start the car, a little throttle will be needed too. To change gear once you have built some speed simply rev the engine and *gently* pull the gear stick back towards neutral, the car should gently drop out of gear into neutral. To go from neutral to second rev the car to 3K ish, whilst the revs are dropping gently try and engage 2nd gear (gently remember) - it will pop in with no nastly noise (nastly noise = your doing it worng). If it fails to go in gear simply rev again and have another go. Same princliple applies when you are going to fast for second (i managed to get all the way up to 5th and back down/up etc). To stop at junctions knock it into neutral, stop, turn the engine off and restart on the starter again.

Good luck and pick a time with less traffic

forgot to add - i went to TPS to try and get the part that was broken. They had to click on the image as the part has been updated (took them ages to find it). When they found it the price was £80+ as the metal resoviour comes with the whole pipe.

I have a local breakers and i picked one up (from TT, mk4 golf etc) for £5. If you struggle to get one feel free to fire me a PM and i could grab you one from them and post as they had loads in.

Karl, if superdad is on the way, I suggest getting it towed home, keep your car running though, so you have brakes, and keep the car in neutral. If you want to try and limp it hope, do it at night time where there's less traffic, it gets tricky when you need to stop! You basically need to change gears controlling your revs with the throttle in between changes, and cut the engine off when you stop.

I hope he didn't do more than 30mph, or travel more than 10 miles, or wave goodbye to your Haldex! :bye:
could you not do this with the fuse pulled jo?

Simplicity - I think I have exactly what you have. The source of my fluid is coming off that cylindrical part, I hope it is. Do you have a part number for it??In fact, does anyone have acces to find a part number for it? I will try and post a picture, on my phone currently so its time consuming. Jojo, thanks for the advise, superdad may take the car now and I'll take his, he is more capable than me of moving this pos!

Ok, car has been rescued and is safe, apparently. Ben gave me a part number, and audi can't find it, they're telling me its something else, pics later. And I'm currently on a train home, catching poverty.

Fuse pulled :icon_thumright:

Doesn't matter if the fuse is pulled or not, unless the engine is running! Basically, the Haldex clutch is a wet clutch, so if the prop bit isn't rotating, but the diff is, heat is going to be generated, and obviously the faster you go, the more heat, or the further you travel, the more damage! When I was towed by the AA, it was in back and white in his manual that I was towed with a bar with all four wheels on the ground at no more than 30mph! Since my gearbox was mashed, it was making a lot of grinding noises when we pulled off, so a flat bed was called to take my car to a garage of my choice!

In theory, it shouldn't do any damage, but you take the precautions.

Sorry to go off topic Karl, hope you get it sorted soon bud.

Haldex plates will still rotate while the prop is stationary... while this ok for short stints (like dyno runs etc) the haldex oil will still get hot... generally its best avoided...

SuperKarl - that is exactly the part i was refering to and the exact bit that broke on mine.

Part number - i dont have the part number but the guy in TPS said that he had to go into the parts diagrams based on my registration and then "double click" on the picture for the clutch pipe (the initial diagram didn't look like my pipe but once double clicked it came up with an image that looked like my car - he muttered something about it being updated etc)

In terms of fix you could by the new pipe from Audi/TPS but it was £80+ as its the full pipe from mater cylinder to slave. I didn't want to pay that so i got one from a local VW/Audi specialist breakers (they are used on TT's, leons, mk4 golfs etc). The other option might be to simply make a small loop of copper pipe with femal ends to replace the "block". I cut the block open and it simply seems to be a heat sink to cool the clutch fluid - im not sure of the impact of removing and using a loop to replace (thats whay i went for a replacement).

Like i said if you struggle to get your hands on a replacement from a scrappy let me know as they had loads in the place i went. more than happy to pick one up and post etc (they are only 5 mins from my house)

Flat toe (fixed bar between toes for example) or flat bed/trailer...

thankyou very much for all your input dude, at least were not alone.
car is at my dads garage so after work he's going to bypass that 'block' with suitable diameter pipe, see how it behaves and if it gets the car home or usuable at least. i think i'l source one from a breakers like you did, unless you are on first name terms withyour breaker and it isnt too much trouble? id happily drop you some beer money for the time. i really dont mind.

Bad news Karl, hope you get it sorted.

Christ, listen to the outcry about the towing! Who'd of thunk it? It was dragged 2.5miles like this with no hubble, bubble or trouble and everything's been good since, and when I dropped the oil out of the haldex three months ago it still looked like new, so all you internet captains can rest easy tonight :nyah:

No worries - much beter to face these small problems with a bit of help. I piece of pipe will work fine im sure (just the fluid might be a bit hotter).

Drop me a text with your address to 07********* and i will pick you one up from the breakers sat morning and post
