auxillary air pump (secondary)

Hi all, had an S3 for a couple of years now and Audi tell me I need a new air pump (car sounds like a vacuum cleaner on cold start) however at £410 fitted, I would like to know;-

A) what it does
B) are there any replacement/reconed versions available
c)how dangerous is it to leave it for now??

Any help will be most appreciated.

I have on of these on my car and from speaking to someone else on here it is not that important and can be left out, but you will get a CEL light on.
If it is really bothering you then change it, if not then leave it until it breaks down.
