Hi Every one, I am picking up my first Audi this weekend ( a3 1.8t ) and am wondering what if any thing I should be doing to prepare my car for a map.
The car is a S plate 1.8t in perfect cosmetic condition at 103k, I'm booking a full service and inspection at a specialist. What else should I change/ replace before a map, cambelt was done at 93 and strangely enough a new gearbox at 78k.

Also, the previous owner stuck a big cone filter on, should I get rid of it and swap back a stock airbox?

Thank you so much in advance for any help, sorry if this is a silly post, but I really want the car to run well and I am completely new to both audi and turbo charged engines

Jamie

Good evening Jamie, welcome to ASN. Post a pic up when you collected the car. Have a read through the threads at the top of the page, lots of useful information in there. Enjoy the forum. :) x

Hi Jamie
You will need a new spring for your diverter valve after a remap also any problems with your car will be speeded up with a remap,a good mapper will give you advice anyway.

jamie was in same boat as you, bought a standard s reg 1.8t too, had it 18 months, and now got that modding bug which is now hitting my wallet hard lol. had its problems like with anything, ive had mine remapped a couple of weeks now my engine is on 120k. you will love a new remap, transforms the car throughout the gears. full service before is good, make sure you have good spark plugs. you may have a coil pack fail once remapped but dont worry these are not expensive. just our cars are getting on a bit and chance are things will start to break down once they are being asked to do that little bit more. ive got a 80mm jetex fitted on mine (you will need a 70 mm reducer too) sounds amazing on throttle lift off, whoosh , and also a silicone TIP which was a pig too fit but does free up some power and turbo spins quicker. my map is revo and is sweet as a nut and very smooth. enjoy...

LOL. Yeah it is a blank canvass, apart from the cone filter. Should I get rid of this ? have heard all sorts of problems occuring because of these things. anyway, thanks for replys. I'll go with just the full service for now and see how the car runs for a while before booking it in. Any recomendations for mapping companies around london ?
thanks again, jamie

Jamie , your car sounds like a blank canvas...... enjoy been skint ...in a good way...;)
lmao yup, I got the bug even when been made redundant = (ah well spend what I got on the chariot). Cant wait for a new job, ****** the bills n buy some silicone bits lol

I have de-finned and smoothed my std box and used a k&n panel filter, I also made a hole in the side and connected a new hoover hose (yes as in what sucks dirt up) sealed it up and took the hose down to the grill to where the outside air temp sensor is. So I have 2 intakes in to the std box. Yes I can hear the dv sound (forge 007p), yes I can hear the turbo spooling (ahhhh) and there is a little more grunt to it too. Mines a 2001 1.8t aum with ko3s turbo I dunno what it will sound like or what performance would be on yours but i'm happy with mine :)

thanks again for all replies, with regard to de finning and smoothing, any pics ? or explain what is involved. Im definatly going to put the airbox back on ( ebay ) and wouldnt mind trying out a panel filter.

it really depends what the cone filter is Jamie,

Many people (myself included) now run a cone filter, in the form of the Jetex filters. It's thought that their exceptional flow capability far outweighs the additional heat seen under the bonnet compared to a cold air induction kit or standard airbox with it's cold air feed.

If it's a cheap halfords crap type thing, then get rid of it, if it's a blue jetex cone, then you could do far worse!

It's also a noise thing too, if you like the sound of the cone filter and the recirc noise when you back off, you need to bare in mine that with the standard airbox back on the car will be almost silent, no induction noise, and no recirc noise when you back off either.

Where abouts are you in the country? and who are you looking at for a map?

The fins inside your standard air box - de finning is literally breaking and chopping all the fins inside and sanding them down.
I used a pair of pliers to snap off the larger fins then a dremmel to smooth it all out then fitted a panel filter.

Hope that helps mate

well my cone is blue, not sure if its jetex though. anyway, the noise i get when i step of the gas is almost like a woble sound as the revs decrease. no other way to describe it. i live in cheshunt, herts and am looking at amd, revo and maybe a trip to badger 5 as ive heard good things about them. I want to get the car running 100 % before the map though and maybe a up rated smic. .. nice motor btw, what mods have you done/ would recomend.. thanks
