Anyone considering a shortshift, see this!

I just bought this linkage after driving an RX8 and being jealous of the gear stick throw it has:

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

It arrived in just a day and I fitted it in minutes, what a difference! I'm really happy with the build, it's fully adjustable up to 40% reduced throw and comes with 3 separate pins for different fitment. Fitted perfectly onto the gearbox and works great. I wanted to share it with everyone and compare it to something like this:

Neuspeed Short Shift kit 6 speed VW Audi Seat 2006 on | eBay

£100 more for less parts / diversity, Some people may argue about the quality of materials but this cheaper one seems solid and as it's so easy to engage gears directly on the gear box by hand, it can't be going through much of a hard life? We'll see how it lasts but so far i'm more than happy. (I don't sell these by the way! Just genuinely happy with the saving I made on the more expensive alternatives)

Yeah, it feels a lot nicer selecting gears now, I still need to do the alignment properly as I didn't have a suitable drill bit at the time so it may feel even better after?

I went Dieselgeek Sigma Six. Worths well, reduces throw in all directions (most only do one direction from memory) and looks awesome as well! Was considering getting a B&M lever as well to make it mega short but they look a bit naff with the mega bling knob.

Will the short shifters work for the 5 speed or is it just for those with 6?

Does this need drilling to fit better?

There is a different linkage for 5 speed I think, it should come up on an ebay search

Nope, there is a procedure for properly aligning the gear linkage with the gear stick, heres a really good video to show what to do, you need the drill bit to lock the gear stick into place.

6 speed is cable shift, 5 speed is rod shift. This will only fit 6 speed cable shift. . . I have a cheap ebay jobby like the one in question on my current S3 and it's serving me very well.

For the A3 options are a little more limited, on my old A3 i had a B&M kit, was a little expensive but by far one of my favourite mods. It's basically a new gear stick/knob with different geometry for shorter throws, the kit looked awesome finished in black with the B&M logo engraved in silver on the top of the gear knob... Highly recommend!

looked just like these, transforms the feel sooo much. Also converts push down for reverse into pull up little leaver for reverse so it's impossible to engage reverse by mistake. . . Which is a nice little touch!

    forge do a front-to-back one, and a side-to-side one.
side to side one is VERY expensive for what it is

I've read here that some people have had trouble selecting gears when they reduce the side to side throw. Just front to back makes a huge difference, i'd like to try reducing left to right movement but it'd be an expensive experiment!

No really, that is a great find.

All I need is confirmation off someone that this will work on a 5 speed.

Strange, I don't really have any problems other than the odd common, clunky 2nd gear.

Sorry, I didn't mean engaging the gears, is that what you were talking about? I read somewhere recently that a guy had to almost let go of the stick to let it settle into the centre to select third as it was easy to select first or fifth as they were so close. Only what I read though so i'm the wrong person to comment! Maybe I can have a go in yours when i'm in sydney next month sam

It looks like an exact copy of the B&M kit. So long as it is it will fit all 8l 1.8t and 1.9TDI A3's

Quick gear changes alone will wear out the syncro's quicker. . . Depends how you drive really, if you smash it through every gear every time then i suppose yes, this does have the potential of wearing out the syncro's quicker. If you ask me tho it's more about making the gear change slicker and more accurate, if you're just as gentle on the gear change it will have no adverse effect on the syncro's
