Hi all, my s3 went to a audi/vw dealer today, the said the turbo is on its way out, its not smoking but does fell low on boost and it makes a winding noise, so I asked wot would be the best and cheapest way to fix it, should I get my turbo recon/fixed or should I get a recon from somewhere else, or buy a new 1 cheap of ebay, the said don't get mine fixed, and don't get a cheap one, or recon one, the said to get a secondhand one and the will fit it for me, does any one else think this is bad advice?, sherly it would be better to have mine fixed or get a recon,? Secondhand turbo don't sound good to me. the want £300 to take off and refit the turbo, is that about right? And wot if the secondhand is not good, ill have to pay another £300 to fit another one, atleast with s recon I might get some warranty with it, is it bad advice?? Sorry to go on but I'm gutted and don't mo wot to do. Thanks. X

I found it really hard reading your question.
But it depends what your future plans for the vehicle are:
If your planning on keeping long term then you cannot beat a recon or brand new.
However a genuine brand new item will most likely be in the region of £1000.
If you want a quick fix to sell then get second hand... Most Breakers will give a short warrenty on a second hand unit.

£300 to remove and refit the turbo from an Audi/ Vw dealer is very reasonable.

TBH the best option would be to either get your turbo recon'd or buy a recon'd one, you never know the history of a second hand turbo, weather its good or not,

seems strange that they told you to find a second hand one,

recon units usually come with a warrenty too

Perhaps you could seek a second opinion. It may be a simple boost leak if it's a "winding" (whining?) noise.

I agree... dealers are notoriously crap at diagnosing issues... I would take it to a specialist for a once over... had an LCR come in that had been to 2 different SEAT dealers and they were saying all sorts of different things for a problem that turned out to be a split turbo inlet pipe that was diagnosed within 5 seconds of putting a smoke tester on it...

Could be a simple boost leak... I would also get a list of any fault codes too as that will help diagnose the issue
