Strange problem, revs going up and down and engine cutting out while driving!!

For the past two weeks my car has developed a major problem. While driving, the engine will rev to 4k from 2k, back down to 1k and sometimes it stalls. It's not a small drop in revs but a major drop that causes the car to jerk. The car will even stall and randomly start a split second after!

    Any ideas guys?

Get it checked on vag com for fault codes. Id suggest checking the pipes under the inlet manifold and give your throttle body a clean and reset it. Hope this helps.

Could be a split vacuum pipe, like said above, check under inlet.

Defo sounds like a piping issue in the engine bay.

Could engine sludge cause this problem?

Sounds alot like your MAF to me. Try disconnecting it and if if there's any difference. If theres not then it deffinatly if the MAF.

The backfiring may be caused by a faulty MAF sending too much fuel through the system.

Definitely not the MAF, I disconnected it and the engine struggles to stay running.

Any more ideas? I haven't had the car serviced in ages which doesn't help. Spark plugs haven't been changed for at least 17,000 miles??

The car will not run with the maf disconnected. Sounds like a similar problem I had on another car which turned out to be faulty maf's.

But surely me disconnecting the maf and the engine struggling more so than when it's connected means that it is not the maf?

Yes if its worse or the same with the MAF disconnected then its NOT the MAF. The car should run fine with it disconnected

Maybe it's the head gasket? Started to lose some coolant too and slight mayonnaise on the oil cap.
