    Markeyboys 1.8T thread

Right, iv been adding little threads all over the place about things im doing to my a3, its about time I kept it all on one place,
    So here we go

This is my a3 when I bought it around a year ago

Was quite a tidy looking car, had 115k on the clock, fsh etc. at first I was really pleased with the car, ran really well, and all I intended on doing to it was a few visual bits and pieces tints, wheels and a few other bits n bobs and then maybe a remap at a later date

First job was to tint the windows

80% on the boot and rears and 60% up front, I also fitted a badge less grill

Next thing to address was the wheels

At this point I was generally happy with the way the car looked, still not 100% on the grill but I can live with how it looks at the mo, while the wheels were off I gave the callipers a lick of paint, hammerite smooth seemed to do the job just right
A few miles in and I noticed a lot of oil around the right hand side of the engine, one of the breather hoses had given way (the solid wiggly one), off to audi for the replacement
When replacing this I ruined pretty much every other hose in the breather system, off to mr audi again, the price for all the hoses was a 3 figure sum, this got me thinking that there must be another way, during an internet search I stumbled across this forum and the “PCV simplification guide” - Guide - How to fit a catch can and simplify the PCV system
With that in place the car seems to run better and smoother and its saved me a lot of money – thanks westy

So with my other wants sorted it was now onto the remap, and after reading lots on here about performance and tuning and what I could get power wise by adding a few choice mods I decided that I would give it a bash!
First on the shopping list was a silicone TIP and a forge 007p

Quite simple to fit, more the 007p than the tip though, seemed a bit more responsive and made more induction and DV noise which I like

Red dogbone bush was next after reading loads of good reviews about them on here, another really easy job which has made a good improvement to the feel of the car

Then I stumbled across the turbo revs side mount intercooler on ebay when I was in a slightly tipsy state, I decided I needed it and it would be the best thing in the world

Fitting was pretty straight forward, the thread related to this is here
    Turborevs Side Mount Intercooler Install

the results were good, it did cool more than the standard, but I didn’t get good comparison with logs for standard and uprated IC’s relating to the weather conditions not being similar when I was available to log,

the car was run over winter without much going on other than cleaning, driving and generally enjoying the car

then I fitted a boost gauge in the central dash air vent

Ideally it would have been on the pas side but I did it at work and got the dam thing upside down lol
Its good fun to watch whizzing up and down and lets me know when the car has got the hump and is only boosting to 5 psi, is cured once I switch off and restart but I don’t know why

Now its time to chase the front end knock that’s been driving me mad for a while
The top mounts were replaced along with 10mm lowering cups

I wont bore you with pics as the lowering cups were pretty much cancelled out by the new top mounts which was a shame.
Unfortunately this did not cure the knock, not was the car any lower suspension wise, while I was under there I did notice that the bushes on the lower arms were showing signs of ware.
Out of course these were orderd, it worked out about £10 more expensive for complete lower arms with bushes than bushes alone from GSF so I got the new arms to save the hassle of re-bushing the old ones
    Old for new

All bolted up and taken to the local garage to be tracked, job done but still a bloody knock the only thing I had not checked was the ARB bushes and drop links.
Was blindingly obvious that the ARB bushes were badly worn, so poly bushes were ordered from awesome-gti along with some hose to perform the n249 bypass

Knock cured !!!!! but a very sore face due to a few skips trying to leaver the clamp over the new bushes

during another ebay session I managed to get hold of a new turborevs 3” downpipe and decat for £45 delivered, so easy to fit, and the turbo now spools up in a much shorter time
probably my favourite performance mod to date
    comparison

    fitted

Spool up time seems to be reduced by a fair amount and the turbo can be heard a bit more, havnt noticed any extra exhaust noise

Car seems to be running pretty well with the mods iv put on, so now its time to book it in with r-tech for a remap, it will be going for a stage 1.5 custom map with the smic being the limiting factor in the mods stopping it from going to stage 2

Of to my good old friend ebay again and managed to get hold of a turbo revs fmic kit for the grand sum of £56 it’s a little bit grubby but with a week to go until its going to r-tech iv decided to get it fitted and running leak free, making it look pretty will have to wait

Luckily enough it’s the same kit that prawn did an excellent write up on

A3 AUM 1.8T Ebay Fmic install

first thing first, map sensor. I made my own map sensor holder

Well I say I, I did get the welding done for me as my attempt would firstly have looked shocking and secondly not been air tight

I also made up a take off for the n75 and had that tig welded into place too

Fitting was a bit of a pain, and all my mates were conveniently busy when I was fitting it, another pair of hands would have made things easier

Hacked the bumper to within an inch of its life but the bumper is on,

Ill be spending more time soon sorting out some of the pipe runs to try to get them behind the bumper and grills, but for the time being this is it,

Tested for leaks using block 032 on vcds only to find to my disappointment that I do have a leak somewhere, I gave everything a check and all seemed fine, went to move the car out of my drive and discovered that I had no servo assisted brakes, eek,

During the install I must have man handled the brake servo line that runs from the servo to a connector around the TIP/Maf area and the pipe had split right down the middle, luckily the replacement pipe was only £25 from mr audi, with that replaced and retested I now am leak free!

There will be more to come im sure, i seem to have an illness where i cant seem to let things be as they should

been helping a mate fit a fmic to his tt yesterday and today, had a problem with a hose poping off, after making some precision grooves on the solid side of the pipe i was then given the task of chasing him around "just in case" the hose gave way and he needed towing home again,
excellent day, great fun so i decided the old girl deserved a wash and polish. i even gave the boost pips a little tidy up with autoglym metal polish

im sure this pipe is suposed to cover the towing eye, i couldnt bring myself to do it, because sods law says ill need it lol

im thinking 90deg silicone hoses stright off the ic to ain the pipes towards the car then perform some magic to make em join up a bit ferver back, away from the grills and towing eye

while i was at the stealers i also got a new coolant temp sensor as i was getting a few cold start running issues and a crank case breather hose

really easy swap over and so far so good with cold car driving

i decided to de-sludge the breather/catchtank an decided to replace the solid breather as the old one was starting to disintergrate, and make its way into the sump,

time for another oil change and sump clean out

easy to change, it lives down here

(may have to unleash a can of brake cleaner down here, its pure filth)

its a case of pulling the clip out and swapping one for the other, its much more hassle if you still have the origional breathers in,

part number for "breathertube" is a06a 103 213 f for the grand sum of £27.03 inc vat
24D04 O ring an 904 673 01 £4.22 bit steap for a o ring, but it im sure its german precision engineerd part

well it all came together today,

finished work this morning (on the night shift) and headed up to see the guys at R-Tech for a remap,

the car was given a through check over to make sure everything on the car was well, they found a few small boost leaks which were sorted, and i was being fed many cups of coffe to keep me going

the first run was done as it stood hen i got there

    A3 1.8t aum @ r-tech. - YouTube

appologies for the shakeyness, too much energy drinks and coffe

i was wandering about looking at a few of the other cars and chatting to pretty much everyone around, nick worked his magic on my little car, a few more runs were done, untill the final outcome was this

    A3 1.8t @ R-tech - YouTube

    i missed the start lol

its gone from 156HP to 218HP and 164ft/lb to 229ft/lb

then i was sent off for a test drive the difference was amazing, it honestly felt like a different car, at 3k it comes alive and pulls hard up untill the redline, and also drives uber smooth at low revs (not that ill be doing much of that any more)

i pulled back into r-tech with a mahoosive grin on my face, and was only just able to contain my need to hug any of the r-tech staff lol

i was then taken through the next bits to address to unlock a few more ponies from the work they had done on the car,

1 upgrade the boost piping to 2.5" as the current stuff is restricting it a bit
2 look into getting a 2.5" cat back system
3 look at changing the fuel filter as the one on the car looks old

i am extremely happy with the outcome, and im glad i went the extra distance to pay r-tech a visit, (amd essex is only 3 miles away from me lol) and would happily reccommend r-tech to any one, there really welcoming and take the time to explain whats going on and why

now all iv got to decide is where to put my r-tech stickers

yea alot more responsive after the bypass and a little more dv noise,

i went for the toyo sports can, only downside is that it only has 15mm ports, you can pack 19mm silicone hose with hose supplied to make it air tight but ill be making some adapters from 15mm to 19mm when i get chance

you'll be smiling for ages.i was grinning for ages after i got mapped by r tech.

about your fmic on the tb side. try pushing the pipe into the intercooler past the silicone so its sitting inside the intercooler if you know what i mean.
do the same at the tb end aswell. will sit nicely.

get some vids of the trip to the ring & be careful!

    another update,

car has been running really well, did have a small issue of blowing a boost hose off, thats a scary feeling, loads of turbo spool, loads off acceleration then pop, engine dies, eml light comes and the feeling of pure doom,
luckily it was just a case of re-connecting and tightening one clamp just above the gear box, i have now upgraded to better silicone hoses for the time being and all is good

iv been on the hunt for bigger brakes up front for a little while and after a bit of spirited driving over the weekend it was evident that the brakes really were suffering, going spongey and smelling of burning very badly. a brake fluid renew is on the cards and now some TT225 brakes aswell thanks to another ebay success, and thanks to the ultimate brake thread on here, are the same as thr s3

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

just under £45 for these was a pretty ok deal, they need a good clean up, maby caliper seals and even new discs but ill see once everything has been cleaned

pics will be put on later when i get chance to give them a clean

That's a good deal too, I'm going to be looking into braided hoses, what make are yours?

The beaker That I got mine from was whining a bit cos he said they usually sell for over £100. But they did look like crap in the listing so I took a gamble really

That's interesting to know, are your originals for 288mm discs?

Discs cleaned up very well, almost look brand new, as do the pads that came with them, another small victory lol

The original caliper fits both the 288mm and the 312mm set ups, so unless you are getting a set refurbed you don't actually need to change the caliper
