Engine Number

This is an easy one for you: Where do I find the engine number on an S3 block?

Need to get my V5 updated and I'll be damned if I can find it.

Cheers

Is it a UK car? PM me your reg and I'll get it for you.

It's a bugger to get to I think... I'm not too sure where to find it on an s3, but to get the full code on a golf was a pain...

Where about on the block is it? Not got an issue finding it where ever it is - Thing thing is in and out the car like a yoyo.

Re: Engine Number

I believe its stamped on the iron block on the right where the engine meets the gearbox. at approx same level as the dipstick.
Look at the dipstock and follow it to the right cant miss it

Re: Engine Number

It's normally 3 letters like AMK, BAM depending on how old it is... There are then 6 numbers that follow it, but that number is usually hard to find.
With your registraion number, I can check it on Dialog, the VAG database, and it will bring up the vehicle details including your full engine number.

Found that - AMK. Stamped on one of the engine lift points.

I don't have a registration number for it. I'll have to have a closer look around the block tonight.

Cheers all.

Re: Engine Number

It doe begin with 3 letters, mine is BAM indicating a 225bhp. It will be on the data sticker underneath the space saver / spare tire and a second data sticker should be found in the service history book.

I'll reword that shall I.
Do you have an S3 with a different / new engine going in it? as you need to get your V5 updated.
Never heard of one needing a new engine thats all.

Or more likely - (and more interestingly) have you put a S3 engine in something different?

Not bloody likely mate what with the missus and her compulsion of DIY and optimax in the S3 taking the rest, Jam and bread is the order of the day.

Seriously though It'd be interesting to hear of what your transplanting the engine into.
You see the missus has a mint MK2 Golf gti that she's changing next year.
I may just keep it in the garage for a while and tinker with it on those cold winter nights. Just need to learn more about VW's as I've always been a tinkering with Vauxhalls.
Hmmmm 8v to 20v now that would be nice.

I've seen lots of S3/TT lumps in MkII's now, so that's nothing out the ordinary.

For the record, anyone who can afford to buy an S3 then mod it has to be minted. Whether they are or not after doing it is a different matter. Just surprises me you guys are willing to spend so much cash on getting other people to do the stuff for you. Some of the stuff you buy is ludicrously priced as well.

There are plenty of sites out there r88per that detail what you need and how to do it. I'll put some links up if you're interested? Makes sense to build one as a fun/track car and 280 bhp is easily achievable. And some! Plus the car's are lighter, especially stripped out. Problem is Syncro Golfs are few and far between and usually command a higher price and 4WD is preferable when you're producing that sort of power. But it's not 100% necessary with the right turbo setup and an LSD.

Totally agree with you there mate, thats why I bought mine with all the mods already done to it. I think thats what scared people off and thats why I got it for a bargain price.
When I look through the invoices for the work thats been done, it definately gives me the shivers.
I'll give you an example, approx 700 to have some springs, locking wheel nuts and a Forge DV supplied and fitted by QST.
He could have bought the stuff himself for less than half that amount.
The previous owner was nuts when it came to spending his cash. Which was good news for me.

Regarding the info out there about engine conversions, I have had a read through articles in Golf and performance VW etc, but most of the work has been done by the likes of Dubsport for ludicrous amounts of money, I just thought it would have been good to hear some first hand experiences. The links would be good though.

I dont mind having a go at most things but the S3 is well complicated compared to most of the stuff I've dabbled with.
I've done a couple of Cav Turbo motors into Astra's, Nova's and dabbled with a bit of stock car racing (Hot rods) but its all been Vauxhall based. (Which is quite straight forward in comparison.)
As far as VW/Audi is concerned I'm brand new and still learning, but with time will definately be having a play.

That's just it. 700 to fit some springs. It's like 2 hour job for a garage at the most!! The DV valve would have taken 10, maybe 15, minutes. You guys should really start getting your hands dirty more often.

DubSport are expensive. I've heard of 6k cost to have a S3 lump installed into a MkII. And that was with the customer sourcing and supplying the engine!! It doesn't have to be that expensive though. I bought a 225 TT lump not long ago for 1k. That's sitting around in a garage waiting for a future project.

This is a good link to a guy doing his own 20vT conversion. Very comprehensive. Gives you a good idea of what is involved. GTI-World

This gives a few answer to FAQ's, but it's American. Still applicable though.

They really aren't that complicated. Once you strip away all the emissions gubbins there's not a lot left. Someone with your experience should have no trouble. Just different manufactures doing the same job slightly differently. If you do a conversion use an After Market EMS i.e. Emerald or Haltec, as this will simplify things no end.

Re: Engine Number

I'll second that Seizure, i odnt agree paying top whack to dealers or garages to do work on my car that they dont really give a toss about coz its ust basically money in their pockets thats all. Nothing is that difficult to do if u know wha ur doing and have some experience and confidence to do it.
I recently fitted a coilover kit with out any problems set it up to the height that was ideal for me. I then had it professianally aligned through a racing specialist.

I wouldnt mind a convertable S3 !!

mmmm now that would be groovy !! just dont have the heart to take an angle grinder to my car.

Thanks for the links.
The way I see it, if things dont go tits up, I've got about a year to do some research and possibly source some parts, then the missus will get her new car and I'll have a toy to play in the garage with.
Until then I've got a freshly rebuilt 2ltr 16v v-hall lump begging for a new home, to keep me occupied.

Way to much hassle with all the strengthening they'd have to do. It would never handle well, so big power would be out the question. Plus the cost to the customer wouldn't make it viable. I've got a 9" angle grinder you can borrow though, if you wanna have a go. Otherwise you'll just have to wait until VAG make a MkIV Golf/A3 based cabriolet. Or buy an A4.
