    Charge cooler VS Fmic

Just wondering if anybody here has evr fitted one to there 1.8t and has there ever been any tests done? Looks like a realy good idea to me and they run this setup on the celica st185 back in the day which ran 300bhp (group A rally car). The plus sides are you could place this where the battery now sits and keep the pipe work as short as possible which is always a plus.

anyway if you have no idea what a charge cooler is or you think of somthing negative to say please check out this website which should exsplain everything to you. Ive never seen one on a VAG car but a lad i know with a mad Focus RS was planning on using one... but then decided an efficient and well placed/ thought out FMIC set up would be a better bet.

charge coolers are only as good as the system cooling them...

there great for drag racing or if you have no space to route IC pipework, but if you have the space, Front mountied cooler is far better.

The Lupo used to run one on its K03s but proved too much for the K03 hybrid plus...

Water is a better heat exchanger than air but there are so many decent FMIC solutions now for out cars its hardly worth the effort...

A decent charge cooler would work but would take up a lot of space then there is the plumbing and charge coolers still use a radiator to help cool the water...

Its all down to the size of the cooler, and the size of the radiator cooling the water for the cooler.

Typically they're used when space is at a premium and that ends up meaning the cooler itself ends up too small, and the cooler for the cooler ends up inadequate too.

The cooler in the photos above looks smaller than the standard side mount intercooler!

The Mk1 focus RS uses a charger cooler as standard, my mate was running a healthy 370 break using the standard cooler with no troubles. . . Not sure bout the MK2 RS tho

AGU-TURBO. That charger cooler set up does look f*kcool tho! could be worth the hassle just to have something different to look at when you pop the bonnet

Sorry to bump an old thread, I was searching for charge coolers on S4's and it seams no one in the world has ever tried it! That charge cooler core in the picture is the exact same one I have for my MR2, rated to 600bhp. Thats another reason for a charge cooler, when the airflow to the engine is no good (because its in the back!) you can pipe the water to wherever you need it to be cooled.

With Air to Air you have to let the ehat transfer from the intake air to the metal of the cooler, air to metal is very good heat transfer but then you have to cool the outside of the intercooler with air, metal to air is very bad. With a CC you go (intake) Air to metal = good, metal to water also good then in the radiator water to metal and then metal to air. This is why the charge cooler core itself can be much smaller but the radiator needs to be bigger. CC's also take longer to heat soak and then longer to recover after ehat soak.
