    17 Year old, Insurance -.-

New to the forum just thought id add my input on insurance for young drivers.
I passed my test on the 17th of January, always wanted an audi a3, quite a classy car for a 17 year old i think and personally i feel like im getting completely mugged off by the insurers, i pay 1700 a year on a 1998 Audi a3 1.6, completely standard inside and out, i even have the alloys made to look like steel wheels, stylish..

Personally i think this is ridiculous, also this is on my dads insurance, which makes the price sound even worse, i know this isnt 100% legal but he still drives the car aswell. What affects the prices/premiums on insurance, although i know age is the main factor does the are i live in affect it?

Just thought id ask for your input on the ridiculous insurance prices for young drivers now a days..

Age, location, 1.6 audi on what are you expecting?

I paid 2,300 on my dads in northen england for a citroen saxo vtr 3 years ago so your quote isnt that bad.

If its that ridiculous get yourself a 1.1 peugeot 106 xn

I know 1700 is kinda cheap but Im just a named driver remember, that lowers it down by about 3000-4000 pound, i done quotes with me as the policy holder and that was unaffordable really.

Is your mate on his dads?

Tbh these threads phuck me off. You saw the quote before you bought the car. You knew it was expensive yet You went ahead and insured it, then you moan about it.

I pay 3500 for mine and i never moan because moaning is like a rocking chair, gives you something to do but doesnt get you anywhere.

If you dont like the prices dont agree to the policy and get a smaller engine.

Youve just passed your test mate, your a very high risk driver.

Without meaning to sound harsh, we have all paid expensive insurance premiums when we were younger, you just have to put up with it, theres no cure.

It is also very naughty being a named driver on another policy. You do know that for the insurance to be valid, the main driver has to be the registered keeper? If your dad is the main policy holder, the V5 should be in his name.

It makes me laugh all these people that buy fancy cars, then cant afford the running costs. Happened all the time on the Focus ST owners website when I was on there. What happened to researching before buying?

Obviously its going to be expensive, i dont mind paying that money at all. i only wanted other peoples opinions on young driver insurance, no need to get on your high horse over no reason is there.

Now paying 2700 on a cinquitento is stupid really, but that is what its come to now a days really..

I got on my high horse with the following lines.

    1. Ive just passed my test

Followed by im getting completely.mugged off,

Followed by these ridiculous insurance premiums for young drivers.

Them 3 lines dont suggest to me that you just want opinions on insurance.

jeez if thats as a second driver, what did they quote for main driver?

age and location seem to be the biggest factors...

everybody has to start somewhere though, and if you want a nice first car like that you'l have to pay the price...

you could try doing a scheme like pass plus to help bring your premium down... im so glad im not 18 anymore... im 24 and still moan about insurance costs.

A3AH, your even worse, your moaning about somebody moaning

As working in car insurance, i'm gonna pull up a chair on this one.

What you do on your dads policy is known as "fronting", if you drive it all around town, down to mc donalds car park, then off to halfords for a good 'ol session of who's sub's gonna blow first you stereo type the boy-racer image.

Why a 17 year old has an a3, i don't know...but as a heads up ( as i never got one) the following details effect your insurance.

    1. AGE ( higher the better )
    2. VEHICLE ( abi codes are used to check insurance group, higher group, higher premium )
    3. SECURITY ( after-market security is very good, alarm / immobiliser / tracker all reduces premium )
    4. EXCESS ( the more your excess, the lower the premium - this is what you paid out in the event of a claim )
    5. VEHICLE LOCATION ( where it's kept over-night, and also the district area rating - bad area - high risk )
    6. MODS ( delicate subject, this one's on you )
    7. USE ( Social, Domestic, Pleasure / {aka} Mates House, Family House, Girlfriends House ) 3PF&T is a waste of time.
    8. MILAGE ( 5k is best option )
    9. CLAIMS / CONVICTIONS ( these go without saying )

I'm also gonna add a peronal point that going on your dad's / mum's policy is of NO BENEFIT TO YOU AT ALL!

You DO NOT obtain your own No claims bonus, and no insurance company is going to honor a named drivers NCB.

If you wanna be driving something decent by the time your 21, bite the bullit. Cough up for your own policy.

I paid £1900 on a Ford Fiesta XR2i (MK2) when i was 17....i've driven Golf Gti's, VR6, Civic EK9, 306 Gti, Even a Metro Gta all to prove that i am a safe driver behind a "performance" vehicle.

Im 26, i insure my Audi 1.8TQS for £345 Fully Comp, an Evo 5 would have been £560 Fully Comp with a 400 bhp limit.....

    No sympathy here I'm afraid.

I wanted a nice car as my first but I couldn't afford to insure it so I did what people used to do 15 years ago, I bought a 1.0 Polo to run around in and got some no claims. Then bought my Ibiza GTi.

Also probably not a wise idea to admit to Fronting, either.

I would bite the bullet and try and go on your own policy mate. Fronting can really come around and bite you in the backside.

I passed my test 3 weeks after my 17th birthday in 2005. I bought my parents old run around which was a vauxhall astra 1.6. Needless to say I paid alot starting on a 1.6. I paid £2050 in 2005 on my own to start building up my no claims. Im glad I went on my own as I owned a few cars from then untill I was 21 when I bought my first new car. It was an Astra VXR. By going on my own policy, I paid on my own policy at 21 for the VXR £800 fully comp which wasnt bad considering my age and the cars risk to insurers. Now At 24 I pay £430 on my 2009 A4 2.0t. And thats buisness use 20,000 miles and living in a fairly decent area.

Im similar to tyson on this one No NCB at 21 as i was named driver as i only used car 1-2 nights a week and my mum used it for work and shopping and what not so she was main driver that was a little 106 1.1 and that was about 300 for the year which was ok, i then bought my 1.8tqs about 4 months ago cost a full £1400 upfront for the year with no ncb, but next year ive included the mods i intend on doing in the next couple weeks as they have turned up, coilies and s3 breaks strut brace and i have been quoted around £1100

    The statistics are funny things.

A mate recently got some quotes after a ban.

Hes 25, but obviously the ban makes things pricey.

    1996 1.2 Corsa was £1100.
    2008 Citreon C2 VTR was £800.
    2000 Renault Clio 1.2 was £1100.
    2005 Renault Clio 1.2 was £900.
    Volvo C70 T5 was £1900.
    Audi A4 1.9TDi Quattro was £3500.

What makes no sense is that both clios and the citreon were both newer more expensive and faster (especially the VTR) cars than the 1.2 corsa, and yet were cheaper to insure.

The volvo and A4 were similar in price and age, and even though the volvo was much quicker than the diesel audi it was nearly half as much to insure.

So clearly vehicle performance and insurance group doesnt tell you the whole picture. Insurance companys use their claim stats to bias each vehicle up and down in price. For a similar reason the newer clio (worth more but otherwise identical) cost less because their statistics must have shown less accidents in the newer models than the older ones.

Address also plays a HUGE part, much more than they'll admit. They claim its based on whole areas or postcodes, and its most certainly not, its much finer than that. When i was younger i ran a quote for my nova at my parents address, then another quote for the slightly nicer a couple streets up the road (still in the same postcode and district etc) and it dropped by over £100.

i pay 1800 on MY insurance with my mum and dad as named drivers, im 18. i'd of never even thought about getting an audi for my first car if i didn't afford it and i would never go on my dads insurance for my first year of driving... just think about next year, i'll get a years no claims and it'll go down a lot, that won't happen to you will it?

I paid £1650 fully comp on my own with 1 year ncb, when I was just 18 on my 1.8TQS. It was actually cheaper for me to be on my own policy then it was to have my parents on with me...

You'd be suprised at what does and doesn't affect your insurance policies. I have worked in the insurance industry for nearly 3 years and I am only just getting my head around how they actually calculate the premium and what factors go towards the figure you have to pay. All premiums actually start with a set base figure and then there are MANY multiple factors put in to create your premium!

To be honest....you are pretty much rated on every piece of information you give them....so it would be alot easier to say what you don't get rated on than what you do!!

In terms of the car itself.....its not always down to how quick and expensive the car is......the other owners of that model of car around the country would have helped cement the risk of this vehicle to the insurers, if they made claims on them etc. So therefore the majority of hot hatches out there are going to be more to insure than say the similar performance saloon. (due to the fact that there are going to be more accidents for younger drivers who all want a hot hatch) IIRC the Volvo T5 is around 225bhp but the risk to the insurers would be alot less than the other hot hatches out there pushing similar figures....clever thing to do is dump the hatches for saloons if you can cope with the image of being a teen in a barge (albeit a quick one!)

Give us a shout if you want any more info btw....

IIRC Corsa is the most nicked car, hence the additional risk.

This website allegedly gives you an indication of the postcode risk:

That seems pricey mate, especially with 10+ years ncb. My
Mum (52) pays 210 for a 1.8 A3 and my dad (61) pays 240 on a 1.9 tdi A4! They both have 10+ years ncb and do 12k a year. Just show you how much your postcode can add on!

Yep - it's postcodes are split across the 3 worse risk areas:

1700 seems a lot to pay for insurance that's void as a parent is fronting the policy.

Facts are young men have a horrible habbit of thinking they can drive far better than their actual ability. This normaly ends up in bent metal and a hole in some local scenery.

Id like to see insurance companies letting you put your details in then tell you the top 10 cars to insure for the lowest premiums.

Someone will probally tell me they do that now lol ..................

As for a lot of other people who have replied, I would have got a cheaper car and my own policy.

at 17, on provisional and later a Full licence, I had a '99 Rover 214i. Great car, but paid £1700 with parents as second and third drivers.
    at 18, 1 NCB, '00 A4 2.4, £1000
19, 2 NCB, same again and £950 with mods declared.
    20, 3 NCB, '00 S3 £1000
21 (now), 4 NCB, same again, mods declared, £700.
To be honest, if I hadn't bitten the bullet, then I wouldn't be driving what I am now.

I know it's not your sort of car, but as another example, my missus is 20 with me on insurance, drives a Mini with exhaust, suspension, wheels and filters declared, £480.

But still, if you have the money, bloody nice 1st car!

Ha, I pay around 600 with my juvenile girlfriend on the policy so perhaps I shouldn't moan, I also only have 1 year ncb on this car. Maybe I shouldn't moan.

Ah the joys of living in Devon where you could leaving your car running on the road all day and nobody would nick it :D and that isn't an invitation either :|
