I would get that power steering pipe changed Stacey, a few Vauxhall Insignias have gone up in flames where the power steering pipe ruptured near the exhaust.... it was on watchdog a couple of week ago..

    Ohh not good

Cheers for the info I will look and see if I can source one

On another note things are going together smoothly even the downpipe as I ground down one of the flame rings so can actually slot it together now

Well that was all smooth until I managed to slip with a 3/8 ratchet and hit my knuckles then causing me to drop the ratchet which fell and hit me in the mouth which has now given me a nice fat top lip......what a penis!

    Right decisions decisions?

Top mount tubular v band manifold but unsure whether to wait until the end of june for it to have 1.5 inch pipe on the wastegate or get one a lot sooner with 1.25 but bill had a recent car suffer with boost creep and couldn't get the boost below 18psi

Turbo housings... Atp are being helpful and i am going to change to a tial v band hotside as only $20 more than my one but not sure what ar to go for .63 or .82
Comp cover i can now go to the full sized anti surge cover but is it worth it? Should just be able to exhange my one for it?

Ideally want the car to be as responsive as possible which points to the .63 housing but is it worth doing if cant bring the boost in early due to surge?

    Opinions guys?

I say, take your time and get everything that's needed. If you know that another car suffered with a smaller wastegate pipe then wait and get the larger one.

Wait for the right mani mate... the boost creep was a mare...

Tough call on the 0.63 vs 0.82... only really seen 0.63's on 1.8's with a GT30... Bill runs a 0.82 but on a much larger turbo so is inherently laggier...

    The LCR looks like this...

The early spool is partially due to the extra capacity but the TSR runners are slightly smaller ID than the mani's Bill normally uses which will help spool too...

The Tial hotsides look quite small compared to the Garrett cast jobbers but thats due to the process used (investment casting)...

The GTX wheel you have is designed to flow more and spool quicker so maybe a 0.82 would be a better fit...

As for the antisurge housing... the GT3076 on the TT still surged with one fitted so don't know if they are really that good... the smaller comp housing you have will make fitting easier for sure and surge can be mapped around at the end of the day... think about it realistically... surge is brought on by a certain volume of air not being able to flow at a given time... if mapped around the surge lines then you are no worse off than using a smaller turbo that doesn't surge as it can't produce the vol of air at the surge point of the bigger turbo (if you follow) so you aren't losing much other than a little torque from boost that could well be balanced out by adding ignition timing at that point...

I would be tempted to run the current smaller housing for the time being, still run a 100mm TIP but reduce to 76mm for the turbo so if you really need to then you have the option... as for space... that will dictated by the fitment given with the manifold anyway... you can also (seeing as its a vband fitting) swivel the turbo round centering the housing in the gap you have so there is the same clearance either side... this way at least if you do have to for the larger comp housing you have given it enough room...

    Or just buy one anyway...

Cheers for the advice guys especially paul with your detailed essay as was a great help

I read the whole thread for the lcr yesterday and it was on a .82 hotside iirc that is the main thing that has given me mixed thoughts although he does have more capacity being a stroker?

Think i will wait on the mani to get the right one but the main problem is that from june through till the baby is due in sept i will be working nearly 7 12 hour days a week due to being holiday season and the overtime will need covering, so time to fit it all will be limited but think i should definately do it right

Think i will give the ported housing a go as from what i understand from disscussions with atp i think i am going to be able to swap them as it was just an option when i bought it but if it does cost then will leave it and stay compact and be a test mule

I'am definately leaning towards the .63 ar especially as i now know you are running it Andrew but will make the decision over the weekend

its a balance/trade off between spool and flow ability
2.1 its should spool nice enough to sacrifice a little for the top end flow benefit potential

its what i would spec for a 2ltr with mods... especially yours being 2.1 and cams also mentioned?

Piper cams are in the post and will get the housing swapped as i've had a look at my last dyno chart when it did 440bhp and you can see the short power band and were the power tails off

as a guide.. my ibiza.. 1900cc, stock crank, cams, largeport, SEM etc etc.... peak power is at my softcut limiter and climbing... which is what I would expect for yours also.. but yours would all start happening sooner than mine given its bigger displacement.

I was looking at GTX35 comp maps only this morning, seeing what the GTX35 compared to the GT35 I ran before.. (closest to the actual Precision 62 comp wheel I actually run, which does'nt seem to have any published comp maps unfortunately) - Plotting the actual dyno results I have run so far on 12psi and 25psi, it sits pretty much on the centreline right of the middle.. and correlates very close to my 2 figures seen. More revs = more flow for same boost in my instance, so to find more power I would have to rev more... which I can do of course, or wind up the boost for the same revs and force more airflow thru. again, its a balancing act.

turbo comp charts here are what I am looking at> Products | Turbochargers

click the ones to compare... and see where your boost was and look for its lb/min flow... and as a guide.. 10lb of flow is 100bhp *ball park*

Is where the suggestion that the ko4 hybrids can do 350bhp comes from Bill? as it has a 35lb compressor wheel?

    yes.... exactly.
and as we all know now.... or bloody well should do if they have been reading these hybrids threads for months and months..... lol, then just because the compressor can have this rating, everything else around it also has to be suitably sized for it

Cheers think I will go ahead with the .63 ar and if I ever do fit a tfsi crank at a later date I can change it then

Iirc mines quoted somewhere around 55lb/550bhp but will never hit that figure and can't imagine 500 is possible on my set up with this turbo

I wonder if I could be the first person to get a ko4 hybrid to reach 350bhp?

And if I was, I wonder how long it'd last for! haha.

I think it is possible mate with meth and a ****e load of timing but engine would self destruct if it should fail

Aem do a failsafe that monitors flow and if flow is to high or low due to a leak or blockage its got a output to drop boost or something else desired

There's a seat Leon tuned by 0-400 that put out 650bhp (dyno lottery) on my turbo which is rated to 550 but was running 2.4 bar boost and lots of WMi at a strong mixture with a shed load of timing, but get the feeling it would spit bits of the engine to the moon and back at the first sign of a fault lol

Well it's all up and running all ok after having to get hold of some more high heat steel heat sheilded pipe for one of the turbo coolant lines as the current length broke up on removal, exhaust also sounds better with no blowing noticeable as put all new gaskets in as well as some sealant

So far downpipe doesn't seem to be fouling on power steering pipe any more as took it for a little drive and so far so good but couldn't really chuck it round a left hander to hard as got my tool chest in the boot till I return to work and it weighs a tonne and didn't want to damage anything

Will probably give it a good thrash tommorrow night and find out if it's still good when really giving it some beans

What exhaust sealant did you use mate? I've been using fire gum but not too sure how good it is. Also did you use sealant between the turbo to DP gasket as I'll be fitting a new gasket soon.

I used it on both sides of each gasket and v band to be sure

It was some stuff that tuffty recommended on a prior post earlier on during the week, it was a bit smokey when first started as expected because can't find any sealants that are rated above 300 or so degrees

While try and see if I can find the post no

I'll use what I've got as I've got a whole tube of it at the moment.

Did you use anything in between the cat/decat to cat back exhaust system?

I've been using the high temp silicon instead of gun gum lately on Tuftys recommendation, and I've found it's cleaner, looks nicer, and seems to seal up better for me as well

Today I've noticed I'm getting a bit of heat on my left lower leg when thrashing it?

I think have only noticed it today as am wearing shorts but pressume the heat is downpipe related?

Anyone else had simular issues? I had heard of someone else that had a simular thing think it was Hollie with the TT?

That must be some serious heat to get into the cabin!

    975 is good for you

It might be worth your time getting under the car and checking for heat damage around the DP. If you can feel the heat in the car imagine how hot it is around the DP!

I get this on an OEM downpipe/turbo setup. I think it's called driving it like it's meant to be driven

I actually ran for 6 months without the main front tunnel heatshield. One of the most uncomfortable things imaginable.

Tunnel used to get so hot it'd burn your leg!
