New to Forum, please take a look.

Hello to all those lucky enough to drive the Audi A3.

Many models, colours, and specs.....i myself own the 1.8T S-Line Quattro.

Breakdown of "Thomas" to date - like the train ( as it pulls like one )

    Bought the car July 2011.
-> Was originally Audi dealers own personal car from Oxford Audi.
-> Mint, and i mean, mint condition, with 65k on the clock for 2001 model A3 8L
So far, the mods as follows:
    -> S-Line 1.8T ( 180bhp standard )
-> Carborino Carbon Fibre Cold Air Kit
    -> Bailey 2 Piece forged dump-valve
-> Upgraded coil packs, with NGK Iridiem Tips / 10-60w
-> Full ECU re-map and chip ( over-fuel, increase boost pressure on full whack)
-> De-cat, and Custom built exhaust 2 1/4 inch stainless steel, into central oval exhaust ( that spits fire from red-line)
-> Now knocking out 254 bhp
-> Fully re-built transfer box, with 50 / 50 gearing ratio as appose to 60/40.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Few issues i've got though if anyone can clear them up / link me to where an answer would be would be very greatly appreciated.
-> Getting a whining noise from the back on powerdown, not acceleration
-> There is a black pack above washer bottle, sometimes gives loud clicking noise after i've given it the beans.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking at doing a port / polish with big injectors, KO4 conversion with, low compression pistons.

Any ideas if anyone has ever done a RS4 into a A3 8L - my mechanic reckons he could do it

( baring in mind he's running a 700bhp Impreza, he knows his stuff)

    Thanks in advance.

    Marcus

Sorry to shoot you down, but there's no such thing as 'S-Line' spec for the 8L model of A3.

RS4 into your car would be epic!

Regarding whining noise, rear diff or Haldex problem perhaps, have you serviced it?

    welcome to the site.

firstly, where and how do you know this figure? lol

and how do you suppose you've rebuilt the transfer box giving 50/50 split?

and there were no 180 bhp a3's as far as i remember ? only 150 bhp

black clicking noise is normal, something to do with the fuel being recycled

good luck getting an rs4 engine into the bay of an a3 !!

you'd be better off trying to get a s2 engine in it

later ones with a ko3s were 180 as far as i know.

the black box the OP is referring to is commonly known as the charcoal canister, no idea why. but adam is right, it recycles fuel fumes, its perfectly normal for it to tick.

as for your noise, start with transmission fluid change id say

Wow an rs4 into an 8l
    That's gonna be fooking expensive
I'm doing a 2.0 tfsi conversion with a big turbo
And I'm guessing that mine is gonna hit 8k at least
And I got the lump for free
I think the parts are gonna nail me for like 5/6 k
And my car is partly set up for reasonable power

If you have the money and know how go for it I'd love to see that

There is a s3 with the twin turbo v6 I'm sure???

Well, the badge at the back has the Red T after the 1.8, and the running road dynamo read out when i first got it was 177bhp.

Baring in mind the car came from Oxford Audi, and was advertised as the 180 S-Line edition, i'm pretty sure they know what they are on about.

The 50/50 transfer split was done by gearing down the cog from the prop shaft to the back.

I've heard before about the fuelling to the back - apparently a fuel-filter change is a easy fix?

I'm just in the process of uploading pic so you can see what im on about.

Ah i see, so the red bit, isn't really anything "S-Line", just decoration :-)

And thanks for clearing up the "charcoal canister", one less thing to worry about -

The gearbox / transfer box all got fully pumped with new gearbox oil after the re-build on the transfer box. The thing is like a nodding head on full throttle, lifts up then sticks the nose down.

Also to clear up on the S3 - apart from the 2.0T, was there anything else that was done?

Pass the dutchie pon the left hand side i like the idea of an rs4 engine in a a3, but where would the seats go?lol anyway, as stated before, there was only ever 1.8t sports which produced 150bhp even with a ko3s, all the quattros are 180 even with a ko3 turbo, how did you get 254bhp from a ko3 or ko3s? Oh and welcome to asn

The re-map i had done was from a company in Bromsgrove - Birmingham.

Firstly ( and again confirming mine was the 180 edition ) they sent me the re-map for a 150bhp 1.8T
-it was just so wrong, would choke on full throttle, and power would die after 5000rpm

Then....after my mechanic called them and gave them a whole loada trouble baring in mind he gives them A LOT of business, they sent me a "custom 180bhp" re-map.

All i could say is WOW!, after it had all the basics done.....we put it on the running road and they were insistant i tell them the result....
Called them and was at 218bhp....then they asked to email it back to them.

1 hour later! they emailed my mechanic the new blue-print with specific instructions not to pass this on to any other vehicle ( as they record my numberplate and vin number etc.....) and again wanted the readout.

Was 254bhp, we literally looked at each other, then took it out on the road....my god opening her up past 3000 is just epic.

not to be a smarty pants... But that just sounds mental. The 50/50 40/60, refers to power split, not the rpm of the prop... If anything I reckon you have had an updated haldex controller, which allows more bias to the rear? If not, you have been had.

The list of mods does seem impressive though

In all fairness....it was a "really?" conversation we had when we had it. The original transfer box wasn't up to standard as there was a ridiculous whining noise on full throttle, the re-build was done by gearbox - transfer box specialist that said it was built with a 50/50 split.

Personally, I dont notice the difference, or know what difference it has apart from "his say so", but peace of mind knowing a rebuilt box was the main thing.

I'll get some more pics up over next few days gents.

Firstly... if the transfer box had it ratio altered then the rears would be turning faster than the fronts when the haldex locks.... the only way to get 50/50 is to lock the haldex fully is with a performance controller or one of aftermarket manual haldex thingies...

The 180hp A3's were TQS (quattro's) but not sure if they brought out 180's for the FWD AUM's later on...

245hp from a K03s is nigh on impossible flow and fuelling wise... injectors are pretty much maxed out at 230hp as is the airflow and the list of supporting mods to achieve that is fairly long and I don't see you listing a FMIC anywhere... those spurious power figures are typically non repeatable and normally the result of wheel spin on the dyno at peak power rpm's which makes the figures look more than they are (I have seen this on more than one occasion)

RS4 conversion has been done once before... lots of work involved IIRC and required body modifications and a lot of cutting and shutting to cram the RS4 drive train into it... was an expensive conversion too from what I remember..

    QST S3 RS4 conversion

    s3 with biturbo engine

    RS4 engine inside an S3

    Quite a few links...

Easiest way to start working out what way to go is to go from your power expectations and what you want to use the car for and work back from there... if using it for the track you can aim for 300 to 500 hp and get that from a stroked 1.8t easy enough...

If its a daily driver then maybe 400hp as much more than that can be interesting on the roads plus reliability takes a hit...

Out and out drag beast then whatever can be shoe horned under the bonnet

anything more than 450-500hp and you are in standalone ECU territory as the ME7 can be restrictive for that level of power and up...

Don't forget handling and brakes either at these power levels as stuff that used to be in the distance isn't for very long...

Welcome to ASN it all sounds good but as Im sure others will agree to get 250bhp from a K03s with just a remap is very ambitious, thats the sort of power you get from a S3 with a K04 so I would take the figures with a pinch of salt. The 50/50 transfer box bit sounds wrong as well, did you ask them to rebuild it with different gearing? Anyways looks a nice motor and clearly put a grin on your face and thats what matters most.

Hi and welcome. I had a passenger ride in the QST RS4 engined S3 when mine went in for it's rechip. Kim did state before we left 'We've got the powertrain all sorted out but the brakes need some further work!'. Boy did it shift - in a straight line.

BHP figures are pub or car show ammo
Did your your mechanic not mention a brake or suspension upgrade, with extra power needs extra stopping and handling.

So far the plans are then -

Already bought a complete S3 brake kit (complete new brakes all round when i got it)

Looking at either Koni Adjustables / Apex Springs

KO4 turbo, and at the same time Wrapped stainless manifold(possibly aftermarket bi-turbo if i can get a FMIC with the "available" funds)

    Bigger head and injectors

Realistically, i want 300, then methanol injection if i take it to the pod in the summer

For 300 hp you will need to get a hybrid K04... Westy is trying for 300hp on a std K04 and I would love him to prove me wrong but even with WMI, tubular manifold, large port head and a huge FMIC I am not entirely convinced it will happen (unless he goes to a nice 'happy' dyno)

If you want to use the car for drag strip stuff then you WILL need a decent clutch else it will last a couple of runs and you will be in need of a trailer to get you home... AWD, power and std clutch do not make good bedfellows...

He's totally rite about the clutch
Forget about any power like that till you can afford a good clutch !!!
I do quite a few rwyb days throughout the season and do 5k launches whenever I can ( everyday)
I use a helix ceramic paddle clutch with an uprated flywheel and it normally lasts about ten months!
But you start to notice a difference in the aggression of the launches after a few months!
The last clutch I bought was about £1300 fitted for ten months of fun and whilst it was excellent clutch you must remember no clutch is invincible, if you run a standard clutch and plan to lauch the living daylights out of it I'll put a couple of months at best before you notice significant clutch slip

It's a difficult decision, and getting the balance of performance and reliability.

Was looking last night to get the FMIC purchased, and the Stainless Manifold

FMIC was around the £300 mark ( and does any bumber work need doing to fit it in )

Stainless manifold was around the £150 mark, but do i need to specify its for the KO4?

Finally, what options are there for Hybrid / Aftermarket turbos - Mechanic reckons a Garret T36 / T38 RB?

Want to keep it realistic, but very good call on the clutch, a lot of people forget the obvious (until one goes on you), but £1300 - wow, thats not pocket change - I budgeted £2000 for the next 6 months.....suppose could run the old clutch til it kicks it, save up for couple of months, get it fitted when it goes for MOT iin July.

    Thoughts?

Not sure where your mechanic is getting his info from... maybe you need to talk to a specialist...

There are plenty of threads here of these kinds of conversions...

Prawn has gone k04 hybrid on his A3, Welly K04 hybrid then big turbo on his S3, Dane has a fully documented S3 K04 hybrid thread and I have a GT3071r big turbo thread...

Just do a search on those user names and you will find the threads

Converting a K03 equipped car to a K04 is a mistake in my opinion.

Having finishing doing just this only a few weeks ago, I would urge you to consider a K03/K04 hybrid.

No additional hassle, no changing oil/coolant lines, no PITA downpipes, lots of off the shelf parts for performance.

The only downside is not being able to fit a B5 TIP.

Give a K04 conversion serious thought before doing it.
