hi ravi,

as far as I'm aware this won't work, you'll have no problem at all fitting the top gear knob onto the shaft (oo err) but the leather gaiter that pops into the surround is a different shape pre and post facelift!

I know this because I ordered the OE metal gear knob replacement for my S3 from Vag parts, and it didn't bloody fit, they could only come up with that it must be different pre and post face lift, but had no solution so I ended up swapping over the leather bit from the old one!

hope that helps!

GTQ,
Thanks for the link to the gearknob surround but i still cant get it out.

It says "lever up the back of the gaiter and roll up the leather gaitor"

There is nowhere to lever and it wont budge, how did you get yours out? does the gaitor etc pull out from the surround?

hi nervous,

are you trying to pull up the leather part that attaches the knob the the rest of the car?

if so... brute force will do the job, it just pops into place, if you push in the opposite sides then pull up it'll just come out.

basically grab hold of the leather and pull hard! shouldn't have any problems.

just out of curiosity why are you trying to get it off? new gear knob?

Cheers mate.

will the gear knob fit onto the original gaiter? Is that an option.

Also, can you send the link on how to take the gaiter & gearknob off.
cheers

Re: 2001 s3 gear knob & gaiter

I managed to fit the new metal gear knob from VagParts onto the old gaiter it's not perfect, but looks great, the top on the old leather one was looking a bit worse for wear - will take a pic of the new one if I ever get my car back!

Step by step of what I did...

1. squash together and pull up around base of leather gaiter, just pulls out of piano black surround.

2.pull leather up so it's inverted to reveal the Audi clip holding on the gear knob.

3. cut off audi type jubilee clip and remove knob and gaiter.

4. remove clip holding gaiter to knob on both new and old.

5. swap over the knobs and fit back onto car.

Note: didn't use a clip to replace the Audi one as it doesn't come off that easily, and even if it started lifting up the leather would stop it.

Link to a useful website with manuals below.

then go to downloads and I hope the rest is self explainatory!!!

Cheers, Yeah i just got it out - it was just tighter than i imagined and thought the piano trim was gonna break.

Im replacing the piano trims with bespoke carbon pieces im having made.

are you getting all the piano bits in the car replaced, as I thought that would be a very cool mod, I'm sure your going for rarity, but how much and where are you getting them made?

think at the very least we need to see pics when your done!!!

Re: 2001 s3 gear knob & gaiter

Im just getting the gearstick surround and upper facia (hazard surround, cup holder esp) panel done for now. Its easy to do as the shapes of the piano laminate easy to replace.

I want the door pulls done too but its too tricky to do, so it might look a bit mismatched - ill see how it looks!

My mate buys wet-layered carbon and moulds and bakes one-off parts mostly for motorbikes.

I should get the gearknob by the end of the week.

I'll try it out and let you know.

Cheers for the help.
