Hello everybody, i own a standard S3 2001 135,000 on the clock.A few weeks ago my EML came on, i took it in the fault was temp sensor and faulty thermosat. So had new replacement fitted, but a week later the light came back on.The people who did the work say they can't go any futher to find the really issue.
So i looked at getting a new car, test drove about 10 different cars,Golf Gti 06',A3 2.0 tfsi,A3 170 dti,A3 2.0 dti,Golf GT TDI,.etc.

They were all nice cars but with high miles, and not what i really wanted. Now i have just booked the S3 in at a audi specialists in wareham, they are going to look at the EML fault, a rumbling sound (which i think is my wheel bearings) and a recommendation for a weak N.S.F outer cv boot.

I'am thinking if this work doesn't cost a ridiculous amount of money, i would maybe get them to do a revo remap keep my car for another year or so. Then get a 06-07 S3 in 2013, because thats all i really want anyway,,.!!

I have a 007 DV valve fitted with a k&n panel filter.

My question is how much do you guys think this work will cost me,before the remap, and after ,.,.Any help and advice you can offer will be gratefully received,.,.Thanks for your time,,p.s...All the audi's on this forum are in amazing condition, well done (cos we know it's hard work) ,,cheers,
julz

Never known an eml to come on for a cv joint or bearing? Did they check the haldex unit? Im no s3 expert so somone on here will have an answer for you, but id say if its just the cv and bearing then it shouldnt cost to much, but i dont know how much a bearing is on an s3, i think i paid £75 for a cupra one, and a revo map is around £200 if you go on a promotional day i think.

*oh and dont sell your s3 :) lol and best of luck in sorting your problems.

Need it to be scanned to see what fault codes... can't really start to suggest anything without knowing what the fault codes are..

hi, the only fault that came up was for the thermostat and coolant sensor, had that fixed but the same fault just comes back everytime.

The other work is just what i think it needs to have done before a remap,.?

I was told that as the car heats up everything flows around the car then it's like it gets blocked and can't read the temp of the car,,up comes the fault again..

How much would wheels bearings allround cost me, do you think,.??and cv boot,.?

Thanks for any help, (just dont want to get overcharged)..When i know the fault i'll post it,.

Sorry but if the CEL is coming up on the dash then there will be a fault code... there isn't a fault code for a thermostat and the CTS generally won't throw one unless its really ********... they generally tend to under read or make the temp gauge jump about...

Be wary of some scanners as they only read generic OBDII P codes and not VAGs extension of the system thats far more granular

Wheel bearings on a quattro like you S3 are between 35 and 80 quid for the fronts (each) and around an hour a piece to fit as you have to remove the hub and press them out and back in again... maybe 1.5 hrs if a couple of peeps are doing it...

Rears are more expensive IIRC and are a bit more of a pain to do and require more 'specialist' tools... never done one personally so can't help on times... VAG boot kits (GKN and BAG only ones worth fitting) are around 20 quid and again take up to an hour but seeing as they have to unbolt the CV from the hub to do a wheel bearing (assuming you go ahead) then shouldn't get charged fr an hour... just the time to swap the gaiter

o.k, thanks for the insight.I'll keep you posted on how much they quote me for and what work i get done.

As Tufty said, if your light is on, you will defo have a fault code and the temp sensor/stat doesnt normally bring up the EML Light, this is normally noticable by your temp gauge playing up.

If you know anyone with VAGCOM, ask if they can do a scan, see if you have a nearby specialist or if worst comes to worst, see if you have RAC cover, they can do a scan on the car and should be able to tell you what the fault code is.

Ideally you need this info first before you progress on work that may not be required or even the sale of the car for which could be a simple and cheap fix.
