2001 (y reg) a3 1.8t red oil light with 3 accompanying beeps!

He's already done it dude, and personally 5w30 would only go in my car over my dead body! Oil pressure fail!

I ran Shell Helix 5w30 FS for about 5k until next service that i got from work. Was no worries at all. Depends how bad you`re engine condition is in the first place lol. Back with 5w40 Quantum now though. Easier to get away with using a can on that than using the pumps in workshop.

It sounds safe, but I doubt it will work. Personally I would take off the pipes under the manifold and visually inspect them, then as I say find a friend with a 1.8t and swap DV's with them. A worn DV won't give you fault codes but can give the symptoms you have. The PCV/Vacuum system on 1.8T's is their biggest downfall, personally I ripped it ALL out so I only have what is needed and blocked the take off for the rest.

I don't know anyone with a vag 1.8t engine! There's a turbo specialist about 5 mins away from me in Derby so I guess if I can't find the fault ill chuck them some cash to do it for me and recondition my turbo at the same time... I'm worried that it has been oil starved for a while and I can hear the turbo spool and it doesn't sound as healthy as my dads old a4 1.8t (that did break on him still though xD) I thought these engines had recirc valves? If this is the case, are you still supposed to hear them dump? I get a distinctive whoosh when I changed gear... I've never owned a turbo car before so I'm a complete noob when it comes to them!

Sounds to me like your DV is shagged and what you are hearing isn't a dump, it's compressor stall.

Change the DV, they are less than a tenner on ebay and my money is on that it'll fix it.

Cheers boss, I was going to put a forge dv in anyway so ill order that tonight, is there a specific forge dv I need for this engine?
