Post Revo possible DV probs

Hi guys, I am pretty sure my DV is pooped, but can one of you kind people just confirm that my suspisions are correct.

Got Revo yesterday and now under hard acceleration I can hear a rapid clicky noise.

If I advance the timing for Optimax via the SPS3 the click is even more pronounced. Revert back to stock and I can't hear it.

Doesn't sound like your DV mate. If it was then you would still get the fluttering noise when running standard map. You could always take it off and give it a quick inspection?

Could it be a boost leak from a hose causing the noise? Are they usually audible from within the car?
Can I reuse the clips on the DV or will I need to get some new ones if I remove it?
Sorry for all the questions!

sounds like the wastegate is knackered mate, if its a clicking, chattering sound, but could also be a number of things.

My wastegate failed @ 8k miles also.

Great /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
The car is still under warranty, but unless I can reproduce the problem with the car at stock, there's no way I can get things fixed.

If it is the wastegate, am I causing damage driving it?

No, it will just boost irraticaly. Does it not happen all the time? Might not be the wastegate actuator sticking. See if the arm moves freely.

They are intergrated with the turbo so its a whole new unit im affraid if it the wastegate actuator.

I suggest you dont take it to the dealers REVO'd though.

Just let it develop so it does it more frequently.

When you say it will boost irratically, do you mean while accerelating, as that seems smooth?

Few more findings:

I get no noise when I take my foot off the accelerator, only while accelerating.

It only becomes audible at about 4500 rpm+ in all gears.

There is no power drop off while the noise is audible.

When in standard performance mode it sounds more like a whooshing noise, when timing advanced for Optimax, more of a clicking.

hmmmm, i dont know now. When i saw irraticaly, i mean sometimes it will boost like it should sometimes not as much and other times too much.

Thats what mine was like, but it kept over boosting and blew the IC hoses off.

If its still charging when making the noise, id get it looked at sharpish mate, it could be doing damage.

Do you know how much boost its pushing out? Do you have a boost gauge or vagcom?

I have vag com mate, do you know which blocks I need to log?

Thanks for all the help on this btw guys.

Yes you need to measure block 115. Log it to a file and post the results when you get them.

Some more info about block 115 (Courtesy of Wak's Website /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

115 - command boost and intercooler boost pressure -
Block 115 will show you a reading in the 3rd and 4th column, requested boost and actual boost in millibars (1000 mbar = 1 bar). You will have to subtract about 1000mbar from both columns since atmospheric pressure is around that level. What is left is the boost request (boost that the ECU wants to "see" in the intake manifold) and actual boost (actual boost pressure at the intake manifold). The ECU controls the turbo wastegate and will modulate it to get actual boost as close to requested boost (following the rev/load map of the chip) as possible. Under sustained full throttle, actual boost should not deviate more than 100millibar from requested boost. If it does, then something is wrong. It is normal to have larger differences in these two numbers under shifting and under throttle application/de-application as it takes some time for the wastegate to react to commands. However, under sustained full throttle, assuming the road gradient doesn't change much, the two numbers should be very close to each other. The closer, the better.

Also remember that you can only record upto 1.54 bar so if it flatlines around this value then you will probably be boosting higher,

i have the same clicky problem with my A3Tq actually...and it does seem to boost harder than others sometimes, although admittedly it does SEEM to be dependant on temps.

I generally only notice the noise when setting off from cold, its a clicking that increases frequency with revs.

Never noticed any problems really though, im getting it AMD chipped on thursday and rollered so that should show up any boost discrepancies etc on the "before" torque curve.

I'll post up with my findings later on. I thought it might be normal though (the clicking) i read that it is the charcoal filter or something behind the headlight?

To be honest at the moment i think my varying boost issue is due to crappy stock dump valve, and the clicking is charcoal filter and nothing to worry about.

If i find out otherwise ill let you know though. And if anyone more technically competent than me here knows that im wrong in thinking its the charcoal filter, please point out as i dont want the car going bang!

cheers

Thanks Dicky, I'll do this on the way home tonight.

Did you log the results gek?

Right, I think I may have been out with my original diagnosis!

The noise is not a clicking, it's like a whistle noise, but less high pitched than the turbo. I can hear both the turbo and this other whistle at the same time. To be honest, it sounds like a strong wind through the trees kind of whistle!!

It does not do it in 1st or 2nd gear.

It only does it between 2500 and 4000 revs (sound drops off after 4000), in 3rd and up.

It only does it if I floor it in 3rd or above with the revs around 2500 ie put the engine under a bit of load.

If I do a quick dash through all the gears there is no noise.

I reverted the map back to stock this morning, and I can't hear it at all.

Unfortunately I have no ftp access at work so I can't upload my log so here's a snippit:

About this whistling noise you describe as "strong wind through the trees", Its not like a sucking sound is it?

1.8t's do this when they have been remapped and is completely normal. You don't notice it so much in first and second but as you say, if you are in 3rd/4th/5th etc and boot it when the engine is under load then you will hear this noise clearly. Is this what you are describing?

You threw me a bit when you said clicking but hopefully you are just talking about the above.

By the way your boost looks ok to me.

Rich.

Also

Have you cleared the fault codes? It may be worth clearing them and checking them again in a couple of days to see if they re-appear. They may have been stored there for some time?

Hope this helps
Rich.

Yes, it could easily be a sucking sound (feel a bit foolish now!)

That's great Rich, very appreciative of the help!

As for the codes, I checked them about 5 weeks ago and they were clear. I'll reset them today and see if they come back.

Thanks again.

George

Sorry, i thought when you said it was clicking it could have been the Wastegate actuator chattering as thats the symptoms mine had - hopefully its all normal mate!

Yea, sorry about that Nervus. After I had a proper listen last night, it was definitely not a click.
Thanks for your help though.
