Will see what's what when the Garrett comes off..

    To answer Stacey's question:

(sunglasses at the ready, there is some seriously bright looking metal on the way)

Top quality packaging matched with a top quality picture:

Obviously they couldn't afford to spend much on the packaging as all the budget goes on the turbo's, which is good..

    Voila..

    Bad news:

Wastegate is tiny, so could be in for some interesting 'creep' issues, but for just under 1/2 the price of a new Garrett core (at trade), it's worth a shot.

Metal looks to be made from a similar material to the cheap spanner kits you see.

The Garrett only lasted about 14 weeks, and it was off the road for getting on for 6 of them, so I have nothing to lose really..

Yeah the port is pretty small. I have Jay's dremel at the moment so i'll see if that's up to the job on the weekend..

Looked at some other options, but not quite sure how I was going to squeeze this under the bonnet so decided against it..

Don't think jays dremel could port a cheesecake. I'll get a carbide bit on it when I get a mo.

Not going to fit a restrictor on this turbo, will see how it goes. There is not a lot of info available, so will go on the premise that if it starts smoking, it needs a restrictor.

Does anyone know the length of standard wheel bolts? I have some 15mm spacers now so need some bolts..

There's been some pretty good results with some of the eBay turbos

is this a safe thing to do, a good way to approach the whole restrictor thing??

Assuming its journal bearing (most eBay turbos are) and not a ball bearing then it won't need a restrictor... journal bearing turbos need the oil pressure to support the shaft same as big end bearings etc...

Updates are back on, Scott has fixed the issue I was having in that I couldn't open my thread...

so basically the turbo is on, it's been on 6 days and nothing has blown up, broken, melted, set fire or generally gone wrong. Plenty of time for that though..

the problem was the **** oil feed pipe I got. I didn't realise it was going to be as **** as it was or I wouldn't have bought it. Expensive lesson learnt and pirtek replacement is in use now.

turbo is being run at actuator pressure, which seems to have settled at 15psi, but its terribly slow... Logging reckons flow for 280bhp, feels more like k03s power though, which is a bit crap when you have haldex weighing you down....

need to gap the plugs as with the n75 plugged in it loves a good misfire.. Not sure what its wanting to boost too, a mixture of epic misfires and me being a wimp meant I saw 30psi approaching fast and backed off. Without the misfire I'll see what's what.

The price of a garrett core means I might actually run this for a while, still undecided whether to sell the garrett or get it sorted at a later date, as this turbo is definitely smaller...

all this in good time though, I need a month or so with a car as I was getting fed up of public transport and lifts... I'll post some pictures when I get the laptop out, but as of now the thread is back underway..

Karlos, it was not the best quality pipe and it disintegrated. The bits blocked the restrictor and voila, one mullered Garrett.

The replacement is from Pirtek and shouldn't suffer the same issues.

Whilst the turbo change was happening, Ben also fitted the VVT back on the car, which might aid things in the future.

Last night I changed the plugs, again, for the ones that Audi use as standard to see if it solved the misfire issue as the boost climbed with the N75 plugged in. Also, the correct banjo bolt for the turbo feed was fitted, which has stopped the slight haze I was getting from the car on idle.

Actuator was adjusted as it was reading 15psi with N75 unplugged, so that it wouldn't overboost when the N75 was plugged back in. Took the car for a drive and it was still misfiring a bit at first, but seems to have sorted itself out so the plugs change was hopefully a success. Car does have a strange issue though in that you can feel it holding back as it's climbing through the revs, it's not a misfire but you can feel it not going like it should.

If i get time today I will do some logging and see what's what..

Alllllllso, after buying this stuff ages ago, but not really wanting to put it into the engine mounts as fiddly jobs like that are crap, Ben said that his dad was keen for jobs like this, so I have ended up with a set of these:

He left a bit seperate and fook me is it hard, I have a very strong feeling it's going to be unbearably rattly in the cabin.

I'm beginning to like this turbo..

I fitted some tfsi coils at the weekend to cure a slight misfire the car had and replaced a breather hose that had split and was stinking out anywhere within a 5m radius of the bonnet everytime the car was stationary. Both were a success. Logged the car, and apart from a slightly odd lambda reading at about 5k which Ben thinks could be the cause of why the car still feels like it's holding back a bit, it's running well. VCDS logs suggest airflow good enough for 327 bhp, which at somewhere between 21 and 23 psi is pretty healthy..

It's good enough to nearly crash when exiting a bumpy roundabout, flat out through second and third, in the pissing rain. Apparently.
It's also good enough to piss off an S3 owner at motorway roll on speeds

How are you finding your (Ben's dad's DIY) upgraded engine mounts?

Did you use any adapters for the tfsi coils as well?

They are both definitely on my (Ben's) list of things to do next! lol

Ohh- and I hope that was an 8P S3 owner....they're the easiest to piss off

Not fitted them yet, haven't got round to it. I've been pretty busy and it's made a change to mainly just drive the car..

I did, but you don't need them really, they just look a bit pony without them.

Lol- that's what I thought about the adapters....I will probably end up following the same route and purchase them.

Were they an Awesome GTI purchase or is there anywhere else to get them cheaper? (although they seem very well priced already on their website)

Got it cleaned and removed loads of crap from the car and boot.

today Ben dug out a bleed valve and fitted it to the avant, after some tweaking the car now sits at 28ish psi and is officially a maf maxxer. 290 g/s at 6300 rpm and all is good.

30psi is good for corners too, Ben was just being a wimp because he was breaking the law and not wearing a seatbelt..

You'd be surprised how well it holds on, managed to get some tyre squeal yesterday but apart from that it grips and grips.. If it does go though, the haldex is so unpredictable I don't think it'd end too well. Once the novelty of 350+ has worn off, I'm sure I'll go back to more sensible driving.

Oh and I didn't mention that a slight exhaust blow was fixed... 5 bolts holding on the downpipe: 2 were loose and 1 was missing so the exhaust gasses were blowing straight up into the bonnet! Ben fitted another bolt and tightened the two that were accessible, which seemed to make things better. Other 2 presumed loose, but inaccessible so were left alone.
