For about 2 months now I have had a rattle from the heat shield around the exhaust/cat, I managed to replace some corroded bolts on the one that covers the cat but still had the rattle from another one somewhere. The rattle only occured between about 1350 rpm and 1750 rpm and has been driving me absolutely nuts when in town or parking. This week I decided enough was enough and booked in into a non francised Audi specialist in Exeter for them to have alook at it on a ramp and sort it one and for all, I dropped the car off at 08:30 thi morning and upon hearing the rattle as I parked the guy remarked "ah that must be the rattly heat shield job then" I left him the keys and he said give us a ring at 11:00 and it should be ready for collection. At 11:00 I gave them a ring to be asked did I want the good news or the bad news and was I sitting down. The good news was that I was aparrently very lucky not to have a totally fubard engine, the bad was was that the ratttle was actually the cam belt tensioner, he said I can see the belt fairly recent but whoever changed it didnt change the tensioner whicbh is madness, I said that the Audi dealers for you then, what makes it worse is Audi serviced it and MOTd it in October with the rattle present an didnt spot anything. I'm just very glad that It hadnt let go, and a bit peed off that main dealers do half a job.

Has anyone else had a similar problem, and how bad does it have to get before it lets go and totals the engine.

Hope to get car back Monday all sorted once he has a new tensioner.

Was that Mat at Volkscraft? If so the guys a legend! Good news on the lucky escape, shame on the dealers though, I wouldn't go near Exeter Audi with a barge pole, they're useless

Dealers never seem to change it and this is not the first I have seen... its more common than you think...

A friend had a cam belt go nuking the head... a dealer did all the work and a week later it developed the rattle you describe... it was the tensioner that they did change despite fitting a new head, valves and cam belt...

I always replace the damper as part of a cam belt change...

Should be noted that the problem here is the tensioner damper not the tensioner pulley... the rattle is the tensoiner pulley on the damper due to the damper failing to 'tension ' the pulley...

A dealer will normally change the cam belt, tensioner pulley and the roller on the tensioner damper but not the damper itself...

i have what i believe to be my heatshield rattling....you've got me worried now
Karl get it checked ASAP the guy sorting mine said even he thought it was a rattly heat shield at first listen, so definately a case of better safe than sorry, Im just so glad that matey boy found it before it let go, I dread to think of the costs of replacing the engine.

Hi Slowcoach, no it's a guy trading as THE VW AND AUDI CENTRE 47, Pennsylvania Road EXETER EX4 6DF from talking to him at length about the problem he seems a very switched on bloke and I'll probably be using him in the future after loosing all faith in Plymouth Audi, Exeter Audi are crap as you say my father had a nasty experience with them ten years ago and we will never ever use them again even for parts. Nice to know that Volkscraft are good also as its always better to use someone thats a known quantity. Nige

Why does this fail tuffty?...is it oil fed?

Never taken one apart but seen loads with what can only be described as an oil leak... guessing they loose a little pressure over time too... worse thing I have seen (and seen on my own car for that matter) is the seal at the top that is normally sat hard up against the internal retaining circlip is down the 'piston' by a few mm's... when this happened on my car I noticed there was a little more play in the belt than normal so swapped it out as a matter of course...

I'm pretty confident mine is heat shield, i can hold the shield and it stops. But il look out for and check.for a rattling tensioner.

Its awful of audi not to replace the damper, its almost pointless doing the job at all.

Anyone know how much a tensioner damper is ontop of a cambelt kit with pulleys??
