I've been looking around for prices on labour to swap the 'box on my S3.

The one I've got crunches heavily into second when coming down from third, and into second from first at higher revs.

I can still get from A to B in it but I don't know how long it'll be for, and I'd rather sort it now whilst I still have my old car insured and in my ownership to run around in whilst it's being done.

I was originally quoted £350.00 in labour charges if I supplied the 'box to fit it, involving removing the subframe and another mandatory part, but I have taken another quote today at £220.00 if I supply the box and think that it's a reasonably good deal.

Thing is, I'm probably paying circa £200 for a box and would be silly not to get the clutch done whilst I'm there, which is another ~£140 so i'll probably end up paying ~£560 all-in so want to make sure I'm getting the best deal possible.

Anyone else had any experience or got any advice they can offer me? I have looked into the possibility of a rebuild on the current box but at £70 per cog and extra charge to pull it apart and rebuild it again it'll probably end up being more than the ~£200 it'd cost me for a replacement.

Weakest parts of these gearboxes are the selector forks and the diff rivits... the company in the link I posted in your other thread change them all IIRC...

I would factor in a DMF replacement especially if yours hasn't been knowingly changed at all... they normally suggest a DMF change to every second clutch but that can be subjective...

LuK one from GSF is around the 250 quid mark...

Hmm.. Not 100% with you on your reply there fella.. What's a DMF, and who are GSF, the company you posted in my previous thread?

Thanks

Keep up bud lol...

DMF... dual mass flywheel...
GSF... German, Swedish, French car parts (GSF | Cheap Discount Car Parts | Euro German Japanese | VW BMW Audi Ford Peugeot)
ECP... Eurocarparts (Euro Car Parts | The UK's Number 1 Provider of Car Parts Online and In Store)

Those websites will become your friends and even better if they have a shop near you...

Cheers lol - Yeah I've got an ECP about 10 minutes' drive away from me actually.

If I am replacing the DMF I'll be looking at February rather than January before I can get it done :( Suppose I'd better do it properly rather than doing a half-job and having something else go wrong!

Hi tuffty, i dont own an s3 but iv wondered if the SMF* can be done to an s3?

Thanks Ad

*single mass flywheel(thats for you route, i am still a complete novice but with all the help and handy threads on here, youl be a competant novice in no time:)

Single mass conversion can be done but its not as simple as bolting up a G60 flywheel. You have to buy a specialist single mass flywheel from the likes of Helix/spec/fidanza.

Thanks for the info dude, so whilst your here, whats all this haldex sport upgrade melarkey? Does it put most of the power to the back wheels?

Yeah it's working out more expensive now that a DMF has been factored in at £249+ VAT, VAG oil & sundries at £15+ VAT and release bearing at £20 + VAT (£340.80 total).

Unlucky mate, then youv got fitting costs, where are you based as i can reccomend a good vag place in tamworth called Dub unit :)

Total including the cost of the gearbox, all labour, new uprated clutch and DMF is £908.80 - I think I'm just going to swallow the bill and get it done.
I'll put my name down for Overtime at work for the next few months to pay it back.. lol

Thats it bud if your going to do it then do it properly, if your going to tune it later to i would stick in an uprated sach clutch or somthing like it while your at it, i feel your pain as i will be doing this to in the new year, apart from the box change:salute:

Is £900 about the going rate for a sachs clutch + DMF + slave cylinder + fitting?

Chris

That price includes a used gearbox, and fitting of that too. Just booked her in for the work and paid for the rest of the 'box. Exciting yet painful on my bank account! lol

Don't think it's that bad considering it would be 800 quid before any parts at Audi

Yeah this way it's all done, done properly, and I don't need to worry about it!
