Anyone else got rust forming along the bottom of their doors?

As subject has anyone else got rust forming along the bottom of their doors, above the bump strips?

As I have on both doors Looks like it must be where water gathers inside the door.

Am I the only one or have others got this as well?

Re: Anyone else got rust forming along the bottom of their doors?

If you do a search there has been a thread on this subject in the last week. Basically i had this problem, took it to Audi, got a new door skin put on and trim under warranty (they do hold water around the fasteners)This was last year and mines a 99 import which i'd only owned for a month or so, so don't take any sh*t from them. If they did my import that wasn't even on the UK register at the time they should do anybodies.
I would add that if they do agree to it, ask them to renew the bump strip on the entire side of the car not just the door as they do discolour and do look different from a distance.
    Good luck mate

Cool I remember you posting before about this, but I was just wondering whether anyone else had the same problem.

So since you have had the door replaced has it started to do the same again? As surely it will do the same again if it's the same setup?

Took it to Audi yesterday just waiting for the go ahead.

You got a pic mark. I'd like to check mine out. Is the rust on the inside, outside under or over the trim?

Re: Anyone else got rust forming along the bottom of their doors?

Mine was on the outside about 2 or 3 inch in from the edge of the door (handle side) above the bump strip, about the size of a top half of a 10p if you get my drift. It was just bubbling no rust showing.

I now seem to have spots of rust forming on the back arches where there seems to be pin prick holes. Its just before the arch where i flares out if you know what i mean.

Hard to say whether it's coming from the inside or the outside as there are bubbles all the way along on the bottom of the door.

So no probs since you had a new door? Just can't see how it's not going to do the same again? If it's the same as before?

Here are the pics to help show the problem

    Drivers Door:

    Passenger Door:

As you can see the drivers door is quite bad and the passenger door is going to do the same.

you cant seal the door bottoms because they have drain holes in them, seal them and youll be swimming in it soon enough

Re: Anyone else got rust forming along the bottom of their doors?

I've had the same problem on both doors and got Audi to pay for the repairs both times (although second time was a fight).

I thought it was coming from the bolt which holds the door trim on, but looking at these pictures that doesn't seem to be the case.....

Another suggestion is that water sits in the holes of the bottom trim, in to which stubs on the door-bottom lock in to - the result being that the stubs rust and then it spreads to the door.

Re: Anyone else got rust forming along the bottom of their doors?

Just checked mine, no rust thankfully!

I have some cross section pics of how the moulding fits to the car and I can't quite see why it would rust where it has. That area isn't the lowest part of the door (almost but not quite). Also as far as I can tell the clips are plastic. There is only one metal screw right at the front of the door, which seems fine on mine.

I'm wondering perhaps if the guys who sprayed your trims were a little heavy handed with them on your car and scratched the paint a bit?? Or if they are a bit loose and have been rubbing at the paintwork?

I'm sure you would have noticed this when you bought the car. Seem strange that it has suddenly appeared since.

Just thinking around the subject of course. I could be wrong.

Drivers door had bubbles forming before I bought it, but though nothing of it.

    Passengers has started recently.

So I don't think it's the sprayers fault. Also if other people are saying the same about theirs?

Ahhh, if it been there all along, then appologies.

Must just be a water trap after all. Surprising the amount of rust bearing in mine these cars are galvanised. I have a chip on my wind thats been there all through the winter and its not even turned borwn yet (I will fix it when it get warmer honest!).

Anyways, get yourself down to audi and demand a fix.

No you won't get something done and will be wasting your time as you need an Audi Approved garage to look at it.

    Damn, thats useless!

My local Audi dealer (Brighton) has a large bodyshop attached to it. I would assume that they would be "approved"!!

Also there is an approved audi garage in Worthing. Its VW, but they do audi as well as I had my front wing sprayed there.

So thats two within 10 miles near me. I would have thought that the same would be the case for your area. Ring around some of the VW bodyshops to check them.

Re: Anyone else got rust forming along the bottom of their doors?

to all those at who are going to try and get the doors repaired under warranty, here's a probable response you'll get from Audi UK:

If your car is under 3 years old, hence covered under the paint warranty, you stand a good chance of getting it done

If it it out of the 3 year warranty, Audi will argue it is a paint issue and will refuse warranty. They're official line is that water gets in behind the trim and then eventually rust forms because the paint can't withstand the constant presence of water.....

They will argue it is not covered under the 12 year anti corrosion warranty as this only covers inside-to-out corrosion i.e. corrosion due to metal impurities.

You will get a load of b*llocks from Audi UK - they don't care about this issue and won't admit the problem (unless their attitude has changed since december).

You will have to fight! Send a letter to Kevin Rose - head of Audi UK stating your case.

They will try and wriggle out of it anyway they can so be prepared....

Alternatively email Audi Germany direct at:

    service@audi.de

I spoke to them and they were very interested in my rust problems but they didn't get involved further as Audi UK coughed up on the repair jod. You can email them in English as there is a guy in technical who speaks excellent English!

It depends how far you want to go with this but it seems like more and more people are having this problem and it just isn't good enough......

Very good points VAGMAN. Its interesting how Audi class the different types of corrosion.

I also agree that it often helps to go straight to the "top" to get heard. This tactic has worked for me in the past.

Good luck guys. (I think I'll be removing my trim this weekend and giving it a coating of waxoyl behind them!)

just had a quick look at the audi sites local
    charles audi in crewe
    links audi in macclesfield
    smith knight audi in stockport

and they all have accident repair centre's so they should be able to carry out the work. the 1 that dosent have this is stock audi. something needs to be done as for a 20000 car wen new this just aint good enough, specially when my k-reg corsa sri on had a small patch of rust on the o/s sill and it was all original paintwork

Just to add to that LC Charles in Crewe is no longer Audi approved as it was taken over recently, and links Audi Approved garage is in Buxton. So it looks like Stockport it is.
