Help me understand wheel sizing...

OK, so I want some new wheels but before I get bid happy on the bay, I want to be sure of the right width, ET and PCD so I buy the right ones the first time lol. At the same time, I'd like to build in some way of removing the daft sunken look where the wheels are not in line with the body when you look at the car from the front to the back... I think I need to increase the ET to remove this.

I'm off for a google now but does anyone have any good guides / advise as to researching this?

I use that at work to explain to the numpties why they cant have R8 wheels on there A1!
