Two options ... CRY or JUMP off a Cliff!!!..

    well my days been super!,

went for the revo map today..

was low on boost so diagnostic work carried out to check for leaks, sure enough couple of hoses with small splits/holes... Thats fair enough - to be expected.

However when they started it up to take it out the workshop it was bellowing out white smoke.. I didnt see this for myself mind but i didnt want him to restart it to prevent further damage.

TOTALLY gutted.. With not much in the piggy bank and the car now immobile i need to look into:

    - whats failed..( How to determine fault ).?
    - How much for replacement parts?
    - Any advice cheap places to get genuine parts?
    - Any how to's on turbo removal (if the seal inside is the failure) ?
    - Any guidance or other help will be much appreciated.

Ps. I know some of you might be saying i told you so but no use now lol.

I joke but im really not a happy bunny.

    Many Thanks , Jon

Gutted to hear that mate, I hate these sorts of stories.

The next thing is to have the car vag-com'd and checked for fault codes, personally I would restart it and see how it runs. If it needs a rebuild it needs a rebuild! How many miles is it on? White smoke tends to be water, so start him up and see if it gets hot.

If you get any problems, you know where to take the car (if they've got time!)

Don't buy that KO4, it won't be your turbo thats the problem. If needs be send it off to CR or Badger5 for a rebuild, it'll be cheaper than replacement and you'll get a better job than if you buy a cheap ebay turbo.

Drifters use the cheap £250 GT28 knock off turbo's because they make big power for 5/6K with no problems, but once a year they throw them away and start again.

Thanks for the post buddy , mmm its seems theres lots to take into consideration with regards to what the issue could be.

when you say you know where to take it... where do you mean lol ?

Any ideas as a quote for a badger 5 turbo rebuild ? surely a new iem will be in better nick :S?

The intake side of the turbo was investagted with no signs of oil or residue, the first guess i made was head gasket but there was no real signs of any oil in coolant or vise versa,

engine has 105000 miles and turbo sounded lil louder than i guess it should, so i was leaning towards turbo problems :/ .. im not too sure now ...

    Thanks , Jon

prob just a head gasket to be honest..... a cheap fix really - if it;s just gone, there wont really be any proof, proof is usually built up over a period of time...

    just my thoughts

Had a head go on a 1.8t and it just spunked a load of gunk out of a pipe all over the road and obv water nd oil mixed in the exspantion. Wouldnt a turbo be a bluey kind of smoke? Hopefully you get it sorted and it dont cost you a fortune.

    Same.... cheap copy...

Are you sure its the turbo? I suggest you get it looked at by a specialist before going off spending money willy and indeed nilly...

White smoke is normally associated with water, blue with oil... if its white then it could be something as simple as a split water pipe... I had this when I was on the dyno recently in my car... scared the life out of me but was a split water pipe that only spat water out from 6k rpm on... loads of white smoke etc...

Get it looked at, get a water test for hydrocarbons to see if its the head gasket or at worse a cracked head...

Do this before spending any money on what you think it might be..

Hi Jon gutted to hear that mate, I was looking forward to hearing your results from the Re-Map. Have you tried starting it again, fingers crossed its just a pipe or gasket, but dont let it get you down there rewarding cars when they run right.

It would appear im the unlucky one at the moment lol, Yeah i was really looking forward to the results. im going to tow it home tommorrow and have a good look over it, ill try to then run it and check for fault codes.

carry out compression check amongst other things etc.

In this sort of postion one always thinks the worst and to be honest things lead to head gasket or turbo but if its not i will be so relieved.

Any ideas where to get a decent Genuine turbo on the cheap if it comes to tht needing replacement guys ?

Ps. R-Tech sounds like a plan but thts miles away - epspecially to tow ,

    Thanks peoples

Feel for you Jon my first one was a wallet chewer but I loved it to bits. I had it less than a month and a chap pulled out on me from a side street and did a fair bit of damage, I ended up having the complete passenger side replaced up to the wing new suspension at the rear and a new wheel. Audi's repair garage had it for about 9 or 10 weeks due to problems with parts, but there was a plus side because the guy admitted fault I ended up with a 4.2l V8 S4 courtesy car for over 2 months lol longer than I had my S3. Had it for a few months then pop something went and was only firing on 3 cylinders, I had to have the top end rebuilt and was told the turbo may be shot but managed to get away with it, that cost me just under £1k then the clutch went. Also had the front suspension knocking, rear springs split, and then the water pump went. After all the money I spent I still loved it too bits its such a fun car and very comfy to be in, when I sold it I never bought a car for 18 months I missed it that much I saved up and bought my new one, which has rewarded me with a £2k bill within the first 2 months lol major work though and at an Audi garage so I only have myself to blame

Lol. some really bad advice here imo, first of all badger does not do refurb turbos, and cr are questionable at present......

People are telling you to go to tuners, and are going to charge accordingly, you need someone with Basic engine Knowledge to diagnose why your car is spitting out white smoke, easily found even for a diyer...

I partly agree dave , ill be doing some fundemental checks myself in the afternoon. a compression test will be a must as ive recently done one any major variations will almost certainly help narrow things down.

Cheers for the insight chris , it would seem they can be pretty costly, lets hope its a simple fix even if its gaskets or seals at least if i find out what it is i can get to work ! fun fun :/

Wish me luck i guess people ,
    Many Thanks

Have the garage that put the map on not given you any indication of what the issue may even be?

If not it's a pretty poor show considering they were quick enough to take your money for the remap.

Never second guess these engines. I had a boost issue (spiking to 27psi) on 225 BAM engine LCR, and SEAT wanted to charge 4 grand for a turbo & wastegate replacement. Took it to Stealth Racing in Southam and £20 a new hose was fitted and we were back on the road.

Make of that what you will, but a 'specialist' is worth their weight in gold.

Alex at Backdraft should get it sorted. He knows what he`s talking about. If the labour is too high for you there try Unit18 in old wolverton. Ali also knows his stuff being a mastertech.

The TT shop in Kempston is another option too, other places are cheaper labour wise (TTS is £60 an hour iirc) but they know what there doing and wont try and rip you off. But if the cars at backdraft id just pay to have them investigate it.

Depends what you class as a rip off, im happy to pay their rates as they provoide a quality service, know what their doing and dont mess me about. I could take it else where and pay a lower hourly rate, but that garage might take longer to undertake the work so you'd pay more anyway and they'd probably use non oe parts too. I had my clutch, slave cylinder and flywheel changed along with 4 wheel alignment for £900, I wouldnt call them a rip off.

Do VolkswagenRacing do Audi, or are they stupidly expensive too?

Sure they're buried in one of the well hidden business parks of MK which isn't too far away.

They`re expensive going by the price of just the parts they list let alone the labour. Their rates arent going to be as cheap as a specialist as they pretty much are Volkswagen. Not a private thing.

Hang on a second, so you took the car to a garage to get a map where they diagnosed the car first. Why can't they diagnose that problem? I'm sure they could if they're a proper garage with knowledge! They checked for boost leaks and all of a sudden it's puffing out white smoke? Don't start looking at new turbo's when you don't know what the problem is first mate otherwise you're gonna waste your money.

S3 DAVE ??!! are you being serious, you see your getting my hopes up now :D :/ ...

Im towing it to work soon, ill do some mech checks myself instead of paying BDMS and see if i can work out whats wrong, if nothing obvoius comes up i may run again and hope for the best ( fingers crossed it will clear) >

PS. what makes you think it will clear then buddy ? the pressure forces oil / coolant past seals which after a bit of running reseat themselves or ?....

Tuffty ok fair enough ill let you off lol, thanks again for the suggestion ill get it checked out myself at work then update the post withe my findings.

Cheers everyone ... oh and also anyone give me any other ideas / items to check. ? im going to do borescope, compressions maybe leakages, and check over turbo for play etc..

Check boost pipework, esp. behind front bumper.

Basically do a general check off everything you can see, Oil cap, coolant levels/colours visible leaks, take off the turbo intake pipe and check for excessive play and oil in the intake pipe.

Then start it, if its serious the damage has been done anyways, run her up and touch would for you mate she'll purrrr.

My old G60 blew an intercooler pipe off and white smoke billowed out but cleared very quickly, obviously very worried at the time but stuck it back on and all sorted....until it blew the bottom end to pieces :D

hang on - it happened onsite? i thought it happened like a day after

there's no way i would let a company perform a remap which then produces a problem that was not there before and walk away with the problem to deal with myself

sorry - buy you have been made a fool of by a bunch of muppetts that were only interested in your money, man up, take it back and complain until they fix it
