Was in my mates dieself Mk4 Golf last nght and noticed on the dash that his instrument panel shows a 'cruise-control' warning light.

The A3 doesn't have this and after reading the handbook it shows that there isn't one anyway.

He mentioned he always leaves his on but yet on the A3 I can't actually turn it off anyway like it states in the handbook - if I flick the switch to OFF then it just comes back to the ON position.

Why is the A3 so much different to the Golf then? Or is my car just broken lol

Stupid point, but have you definitely pushed the on/off switch on the stalk as far right as it goes? It's a two stage switch, so pushing it a bit to the right as you say cancels the current cruise setting, but then springs back onto the 'on' position ready to be set again. A firmer push should see the switch click permanently in the off position.
