my rear wiper works fine when doing the first swipe but each time its on the return to the starting point its a start stop action all the way back what could be causing this

Mines the same, I think we need new wiper motors, Waaaay down the list of priorities for me.

Take the motor apart and clean the surface of the copper disc inside. Ideally use some switch grease on the surface of it after you have cleaned it with contact (electrical) cleaner.

Its a typicle fault with Audis (and other VAGs).
The washer jet goes through the middle of the motor, this then leaks and water gets in to the motor and causes corrosion of the metal contact.

You can sometimes get away with cleaning it, Like pj123 said.
This worked for my mate but failed for me and a friend with his B7.
I removed my motor and he bought a new one.
