my octavia use to do this and now my A3 does it occassional. you start the engine and there is screatch from the engine. it seems to be a common problem as the octavias we use to have at work did it as well. can anyone tell me what it is? is it the start motor?

a common fault then REPTOR. does it mean its on its way out or still ok

It sound like the dog clutch on the starter motor has gone dry, I've known cars that have made the noise for years without any ill effect. It just sounds as if you are strangling a guinea pig when you start your car .

(ps, no guinea pigs were harmed whilst describing the noise :icon_thumright:)

Mine screetches (spelling?) when started and it slowly dies away over a second or two. It's my auxilliary drive belt, I turned mine over as they are double sided and it stopped.
