hey all just got my car back from dealers and whilst in there had a nosey in the workshop in there to my horror found out about a problem with early (MK1) A3s gearbox. (NOT QUATTRO)
most boxes used were mk4 golf boxes used and the problem with these is that the crown pinion in the diff are not bolted on but riveted these can shear and punch holes through the bell housing which in all asspects kills the box and clutch and leaks all gear oil out. so all if you have a leak from gearbox (fairly major leak) this is proberly the reason why.
P.S new box £1400 approx

well all the gear box refurbishers i spoke to say this is a common problem and is the main reasons for there work and exchange on the boxes

Welcome to the world of VAG gearboxes. This has been a problem since year dot for VAG.

There is a bolt kit available for them which solves the problem. God only knows why VAG don't fit the bolts at the factory and still insist on fitting rivets!!

Here are pics of what happened to my Golf's gearbox last year :-(

I take it the bolt kit is an Audi fit job though?

no a good mechanic can do it but its an expensive job for little to be done catch 22
