Morning everybody!

I finally decided on my choice of wheels :hubbahubba:

I wanted to run with a lightweight motorsport inspired wheel and I was going to go for some speedline turinis but I've found something a bit different.

I think I understand offset etc. but I wanted to hear peoples experiences with this size of wheel, and suggestions for tyre sizes.

The new bad boys are 18x8.5 and (currently ET35, with flat spokes as opposed to ones that bend in) but Im going to see if I can get a set at ET23 ish.

Am I going to be able to run these without a stretched tyre? I dont really want stretched tyres, my car has to be able to handle a good thrashing and I dont want to have to worry about whether the tyre is going to pop off!

Is ET23 going to be enough on and 8.5 wheel to clear the damper etc?

What do you guys do/think?

morning, i'm by no means an expert, but ET35 is within the standard for the S3, so may be a good idea to stick with that? although it depends slightly how much bigger than standard your brakes are.. these two diagrams help explain it a bit, although pretty simple. however i'm sure there is some wheel geniuses on here who can shed more light! good luck with the search though.. u got any pics of the wheels in question? i'm currently looking at getting a new set for mine, and was considering 18 X 8.5. My understanding of it, which could be wrong, is that as they are the same offset (ish) as standard avus' they will sit in the same place inside the arch so would require spacers to give a good stance and there will be another inch of wheel the other side - probably causing rubbing. So if I can get hold of something like ET23, I wont have to buy spacers and Im less likely to rub on the damper (which is where my tyre choice question comes from)... Happy to be shown the light :icon_thumright:

use this to get an idea of offset.Wheel Offset Calculator

et23 will look siiiick! should fill arches really well. even et35 will look standard fitment. id run a 235 wide tire with that width rim. most people run 225/40's with 8 inch rims and theres no stretch there and not too much side wall, so 235 should fit right whilst maintaining the a similar rolling circumference as standard wheels so as not to throw your clocks out.

those wheels are awesome

Standard S3 wheels are 5x100 ET32 7.5J

As far as I understand it Dane the smalle the ET number the further out your wheels are. On my S3 wheels I'm currently running ET22 Front and ET17 Rear using 10/15mm spacers.

When I fit my S4 wheels 5x112 ET45 8J with 235 tyres i'm having to use 20/25mm adapters to get my offsets to ET25 Front and ET20 Rear. I'm hoping this will do it.

my BBS LMs are 8.5" ET 25. Im not sure how close 8.5" would be to the struts with ET35 but closer than stock. Stock Avus are 17.5" ET32 i think so you would be closer to the strut with ET35 and 8.5" rims by ~ 1.6 cm

ET23 would be fine for the damper, it would clear it more than mine does and i have no issues with clearance and they would only stick 2mm further out than mine do currently which is fine.

And you can run with 225/40/18 with no strech, so no worries there either

So go ET23

right yeah i get you now, for stance your right you want a lower offset to fill the arches without spacers. sounds like a good plan! btw those wheels look sweet! what are they?

Aha! thats a secret :ninja: But they are pretty cool aren't they!

They have to be imported from the US so I wont have them for a month or so... :3sadwalk:

I think it makes more sense to get them at ET23 to try and avoid having to buy spacers aswell.

So if I run 235/40/18 tyres that should be a good?

Dane those wheels are sweet and they will be a new look and look great on the S3. Not as nice as the S4 wheels though ;)

I dont think you'll suffer too much waiting a month for them to arrive as you'll be gunning round in your hybrid turbo's S3.

225/40/17's 3mm more rolling circumference than 225/45/18. 235/40/18 are 11cm longer. So speedo is 1.7% out. i.e when doing indicated 60mph your actually doing 61 mph!! Blue lights are coming for you :) Should be fine

:) I'm glad you guys like 'em, motorsporty but different.

I think I'll live! I am going to need new front tyres pretty ricky tick though, which I dont imagine the hybrid is going to help with!

I want something like this for mine but all the wheels here seem to be for japanese cars or they are bling bling chrome. Terrible choice for people who want decent wheels.

Where are you getting them from?

Exactly why I bough new wheels. I needed 2 new tyres and my wheels desperately need a refurb so I thought I'll just buy some 18s with decent tyres and in better condition than my wheels ;)

Maybe you need a performance haldex controller to even out the tyre wear between the fronts and backs ;)

I'm on the list dude! My rears are absolutely fine loads of miles left but the fronts are getting close to the wear markers. But I'm gonna turn them into a winter set.

It's a shame the RSTT's Ive got don't have a bit more tred on, I could swap em over to keep me going, but meh.

The weight of these new ones is pretty good c. 10 kg - could be lighter but not ott.

They look like the classic Compomotive MO's.

Dane, you will need ET30 minimum to clear the front struts with an 8.5" rim from my experience, ET23 is going to be quite close to your wheel arches, maybe catching territory with an 8.5" rim, in my opinion.

Compomotive don't do them in 18's so this is the closest thing I can find.

So maybe theres an arguement for getting the ET35 and then messing about with spacers, i.e. 10mm, to try and get it right. Because I'll be stuffed (have to stretch the tyres) if theyre Et23 and catching.

Is that with ET35 or 23 bud? will 225's not be a bit streched?

This is ET22 on an 8" rim and 225 tyres Dane, no clearance issues, I doubt it will look too stretched on an 8.5" rim, but if going for 235's, I'd try and stick with ET30. The rears are ET17, why not get a pair of each for front and rear.

I dont see any issues. My car is on H&R springs giving an alleged 25mm drop and its fine in terms of wheel arch clearance

Sorry dude no idea, Do it and let me know... :ninja: lol

In my case it strikes me as a bit of an ask for a 225 tyre, which I currently use on my 7.5J Avus', to wrap an extra inch of alloy wheel. If I get ET35s with 235 tyres and a 10 mm spacer for the fronts and a 15mm spacer for the rears that might be a more versitile option.

Cookstein do you have a pic of how your tyres sit on the Lms?

No problems dude, anything would be good just to help visualise it.

as you can see the rears could even come out an extra 10mm to sit like the front
they are 5x110 8.5x18 ET25 with 225/40/18s --- no stretch

My BBS CH's are 8.5x18 et30 mate, and i run 225/40/18's. I would stick with 225's mate as i think the S3 is overtyred anyway, i think they are probably the best size for handling mate, and they arent stretched on 8.5" rims.

those BBS Chs look great... i have been looking at them for a while, but they're a very popular wheel choice i do see them a lot, but then again there's obviously a reason why they are popular - they look so good!

S3Steve, are you using any spacers with those CH's?

Going by what most of the so called motorsport experts say, keep it on 17's if you want the car to handle as well as possible, unless you have massive brakes of course and spacers are a big no no for high speed cornering as it ruins the geometry the car was originally running from the factory, but this is advice from people in the Ford world, I'm not sure about VAG so much though.

The pictures are a big help, cheers gents!

I'm going to try and get the ET23 ish ones and run 225s, there seems to be plenty of tyre to play with.

dane those wheels are pure porn and they do look like mo's jojo

The order has been confirmed, but no et23 so they will be ET 35.

So I'll space the rears by 16mm and the front by 11mm or so. Should sit nicely at that I reckon.

I cant wait either I hope it'll look spot on, not crazy low but gooooood, the cars getting there, I just put the progress up in my other thread
