I'm starting to plan out the engine work and have been thinking about whether it will be easier to remove the whole block and not just the head! The reason behind this is that the gearbox is coming out to do a clutch and flywheel change so would it be easier to remove the block to do the rods and fit the new cambelt kit?

I'm thinking about removing the front of the car and bringing the whole engine out the front. I have access to an engine hoist and an engine stand so working on the engine will be a lot easier.

If anyone with the experience could comment as to whether this sounds like an easier alternative to leaving the bottom end in place and just dropping the box and removing the head. Also any other little jobs that might be worth doing with the bottom end out eg. replacing engine mounts, cleaning & painting the block.

    Thanks in advance.

I'd do that mate if the box is coming out as well!

Whip the whole lump out, build it in the garage, gives you more chance to clean and paint it all up as well. reassemble it all in the garage and slot it all back in! it'll make it SO much easier fitting the turbo and everything I would have thought.

Bill has a TT in at the moment (thread in the TT section here) thats having a BT conversion and we took the front off and engine out for that... was a lot easier but you will need to get your aircon drained down really prior to doing the work...

I am going to do mine this way the next time my engine is coming out... that won't be for a while hopefully but when I do the rebore/stroker then it will be front off and engine out..

    Build thread PIC HEAVY! :)

No problemo. I didn't get the aircon re-gassed after I changed the heater matrix

Looks like it's a plan then. Thanks for your comments guys.

You want it as a track car in the end anyway so whip out the aircon while you`re at it!

At the moment I'm only running water. I have a tiny amount of meth but its pointless until the Easter work is done.

I'm just glad the kit is now working so at least I can get some meth in preparation for the build now.

I cannot wait to see the outcome once you've built the engine dude, so few people bother building a proper spec engine for a ko4 turbo, So i guess nobody really knows what it'll be capable of!

Got some news from Backdraft Motorsport today about my IE rods. They are going to be another 2 weeks! It's been 4 weeks already! Good job I bought them early.

I hope I don't have a similar experience with Awesome over their clutch kit as I'm 6 weeks from the build now.

Shipped direct from PagParts in the states. MUCH less hassle.

Yeah I remember reading about your issues getting hold of IE rods. Luckily I'm not dealing with the directly, it's Backdrafts job to get them off IE or I'll spend my money somewhere else.

Thinking about it backdraft messed me about too, when i rebuilt that TT engine.

They'd listed some used BAM piston/rod assemblies, with new big end bearings for sale for ~£200 and i baught them. Bit pricey but i figured they'd be respectable. They arrived with the big end bearings already fitted to the con rods, and the four piston/rod assemblies loosely placed into a box with hardly any protection.

If that wasnt bad enough, then i discovered the bearings fitted were undersize ones that you'd use if you'd reground the crank, meaning they went in the bin and i had to order new ones.

Hopefully they'll be fine given they're new

I suspect these had been laying around their workshop for a while. It was just the fact that they never mentioned the bearings were undersize (and given these cranks hardly ever wear you wouldnt expect them to be!) and the way they'd been shipped/packed was awful.

hmm, i think you've got the wrong end of the stick somewhere.

Your new rods will come with new little ends fitted.

I have to say i have been very impressed with the service and especially the cost with the current exchange rates. from whats been said it looks like I have just been lucky.
I think rods have always taken a lot longer to get from IE but I wouldn't be surprised if Backdraft forgot to place my order!

Admittedly it was a set of 550 injectors and ARP head bolt. Out of intrest are you going to be using ARP head bolts? IE were one of the

I've just got standard head bolts at the moment. I hope the head goes on and doesn't need to come off again.
