Been offered a immaculate s3 1999 in imola yellow from a mate (mature owner :) only thing it has 136k but is backed up by a ful auo service history and looked after by 3 owners 1 of which had it from ew for 8 years. The interior is mint black leather and back seats don't look like they hardly been sat in the whole car in generally is mint cleaner than my car which is on 60k. I'm new to the forum so would like to hear people's thoughts etc help would be great cheers

Make sure the cambelt / water pump has been changed, as well as the clutch and if it's a facelift model, the cam chain tensioner. Those are the major bills. If the price is right, I'd buy it with 134k and full history, no problem at all!

Mine has done 125K and is mechanically sweet. The things that will tire will be the following so you'll probably have to replace soon:

- Suspension. Shocks, springs, bushes, ball joints, drop links, track rod ends
- Turbo. The turbo blades get blunt and need refurbing
- Rubber hoses. Rip them all out and replace with silicone

Body work is a bit tatty on mine but I'll sort that out once the performance is sorted.

Bit of a thread jack: But a few months ago, I was looking at S3's and alot had done around 100k which put me off a bit.Now I know that the engines go on for ever, and assuming the cambelt/waterpump has been done am I right in thinking that their isn't much difference between a car with 80k and 100k, as long as it has good history? What I mean is, 100k has a bit of a stigma attatched, but is it valid?

Bodywork is mint all original paint it's been staged every night or it's whole life as for suspension that's all been replaced with track rods etc just finding out about the cambelt and water pump as for turbo seems to pull very nicely and sounds so sweet no noises. All that's been done it cat back miltek revolution remap h&r springs and nice set of dished wheels. He had the car looked over when has it remapped and they said the engine runs sweet ad a but not a single problem showed up when they mapped it. thanks for the help keep it coming

Sounds like a nice example then mate.

The other thing that is renowned for going wrong is the oil pickup pipe gets blocked. It's worth getting it checked as it can wreck an engine if blocked.

the stigma is/was true with cars built pre 1990s

Sounds like it will be a good buy. If 99 then won't be facelift but still a gooden.

Cheers for all the advice. Think I will end up going for it. Cambelt is due April 2012 had a qoute from a Audi specialist gaage for £340 for cambelt and water pump so not to bad.

I purchased a 154k miler with full documented SH, no problems at all... ok, the bodywork isn't perfect, but nothing out of the ordinary, it really depends on how the previous owner has looked after it!

Nothing a lick of paint cant sort out. I used to be one of those people worried about high milers till I bought mine. To be fair I have replaced a fair bit but running wise it's never missed a beat.

Mine had done mainly motorway miles in it's previous life so it was very stone chipped. Just needs a bumper and bonnet respray and it'll be brand new again.

Mine was the same, bought it with 115k on it, replaced some suspension components and had the front end painted and its like a new car :D

My 8L S3's got 186k and still goes like stink. Took it down for an MOT on Wednesday and it was actually more fun than my 8P S3...

2007 S3 - Swivelly headlights, magic foldy mirrors, two tone warm cow seats, beepy reverse, lazy motorway button, well good talky radio with telly & map, loads of lights inside, squished steering wheel, Milltek cat-back tubey bits.

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I paid £4k for my 51 plate S3 in Feb and it's now on 131k. Runs sweet, its currently at jabbasport as we speak having timing belt done spring bushes arbs and remap. I'm spending a fortune on it at the moment. If all the bushes and suspension are good doesn't sound too bad a price if it's immaculate.

Cheers for the info goin over to look through the paperwork tonight see what's been done services etc
