Hi All,

I am starting to get seriously annoyed with some things about my S3, reliability wise and am thinking of getting a lot of work done as I love the car.

Obviously I'll declare and power increases from re-map or major suspension work etc, but how about the following?

- non OEM pads or Discs?
- non OEM Bushes?
- DV?
- Suspension changes like ARBs ETC?

And more to the point what kind of extra premiums are people paying for break upgrades and other items on the list, I'm paying £900 ish with Direct Line at the moment - only 23 with 3 years no claims.

Things like pads and discs arent worth declaring unless you are changing dimensions .etc or callipers to big brakes.

DV - again, questionable, but do it for peace of mind.

Anything your adding to the car, tell them about! so ARB's would be best declared.

direct line wont accept any mods unless your over 25.... and if they do let me know!!!

i have been arguing the past few days with them cause i want to put aftermarket wheels on my s3 but im only 21 so they wont insure me!!

they said it was their policy not to allow mods for under 25's

personally i would let them know about noticeable stuff like wheels, suspension, body kits, big brakes etc. the insurance assesors take a good look at the car but they wont take the engine apart to check for bits do the DV should be ok.

I put Brembo brakes on my Ibiza Cupra turbo and directline didn't charge me any extra as it is seen as increasing saftey /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm gonna call them and say i've got £30 wing mirrors on my car now (well 1 so far!) - rather than the £800 Oem's.

Who wants to made me a market on me getting money back /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

samcos, everything just to be safe.

DL used to insure mods under 25.

Maybe they have changed policy, or it depends on area/age too. so whats that cost you then with all that?

Below is a snapshot of bits of an an old policy shedule,

I was 24 with DL at the time.
Prior to this i was insuring similar mods on a 2002 225 S3 @ 23

my mods list is a little longer now, but its filled the space on the shedule, and they just list them on the system.

only the "chipped management systems" made any difference to premium.

Most insurers now use preset headings on their system to describe modifications.

as such they tend to simplify them into groups.

aka

chipped management systems = actually a remap
Dump valve = actually a Diverter valve
Brake disks drilled/Vented = actually Front Porsche Brake Upgrade in my case, and would cover any upgrade to the rear as well.

spacers front/rear mentioned and listed, but they were understood to be part and parcel of the brake upgrade.

your also note that they diferenciate between aftermarket fit and factory fit.

My wheels, sat nav, and suspension etc are factory fitted items.

they would be decribed differently if aftermarket fit.

i passed my test 2 months after turning 17. had my own insurance ever since... its the only way to do it!

age 17- pug 305 GL - £950 per year TPFT
age 18- honda crx 16v - £1200 per year TPFT
age 20- VW corrado vr6 - £1100 per year Full Comp
age 21- S3 - £750 per year Full Comp

oh and im a CB1 postcode... one of the lowest risk post codes in the country.

back to the mods!.... i'm gonna phone direct line again at lunch and find out exactly about this stupid policy of theirs! if anyone else finds out about it aswell PLEASE let me know!

As I've mentioned to Jedi knight before, elephant.co.uk are pretty for insuring modified cars. I think you still need to be 25 or older though.
An exhaust + manifold modification, after a chip cost no extra.
Lowering suspension added about 5% onto my premium.

Chips are a big no no though as far as insurance goes. Elephant added 40% onto my premium if I wanted a remap.

Hope this helps

Decided to declare my mods to TSB insurance just before xmas as i was parking at gatwick for a week, they basically said that even if i upgraded my dustcaps they would not insure me, within the hour i was insured with Adrian Flux all mods declared and CHEAPER THAN UNDECLARED non specialist insurers. Check Flux out if you are thinking of changing policies. AB

adrian flux and greenlight insurence are the boys when it comes to mods and insurence imo
