fixing head gasket, whats involved?

I am in the process of buy another agu 1.8t but the person that is selling it reckons the head gasket has gone, he is not giving much away with what the syptoms are so im guessing he doesnt know. Anyway, what is involved with replacing the head gasket? I know you have to skim the head etc, but is there anything else that needs doing? I have tried searching for the relevant info but nothing answers my questions. I am pretty familar with the agu after stripping 2 of them recently and i am pretty mechanically minded, but never done this before, although ill probably get my mate to do it.
Any info would be great!
