hi all. i have an a3 with driveshaft / arb issues due to over lowering :)

i bought a tt arb off ebay and paid the guy last wek. he just emailed me and said he has sold it...muppet.

anyway he has offered me an s3 arb. am i right in thinking the s3 arb is same as the r32 so will fit sae way as tt one but is 23mm, not 19mm.

i guess this will cause issues with the rear arb being undersized now!

help and advise as always appreciated. and before you say whiteline, its only £30.

Steve

Spot on mate, they're just thicker but are the same shape so should fit straight on as with the TT ARB. May improve the handling with the thickness.

Does your A3 have a rear ARB? I don't think they come with rear ARBs as standard....somebody correct me if I'm wrong here.

from a bit of very quick research...
a3 and tt has 19mm arb
s3 has 21mm
r32 has 23mm

a3 has no rear one so may need to look into that or i will suffer from oversteer i think. is that correct? so if i get the s3 front arb, what size rear should i look at and from what car can i get it from. don't have the money to get a specialist one like neuspeed unfortunately.

S3 MATE MAY AS WEll snap the arb up lol or ill give u my tt one and u give me the s3 one ;)

cool. i'll buy it and may swap with you depending on what people say. Steve

frickin ebay. panic over....

he emailed me:
both of them sold now s3 arb same or not?

so i replied:
Why did u sell them? I paid for the tt arb straight after u said it was available! I was expecting it to arrive tomorrow like you said. I have no idea if s3 is the same but will try and find out.

he replied:
i dont know who you are mate amount of email i get cant remember who is who lol ,sold 2 this week so you should be one of them dont panic !!!

so looks like panic is over! have asked about the price of the s3 bar, i'll let you know if its cheap....

yeah, but for the price i won't complain. one guy wanted £90 for one plus postage!!

i hope it solves my clunking, banking, rubbing issues. i hard to turn left so slow now!! :)

dunno if the arb would sort clunking out? ive just purchased top mount kits with the arb. cost me 60posted for the tt arb. cant have no hassle with knocking puts me off the car instantly lol 90psted wow.keep the guy stweet lol

it had better. nothing else to replace! did you get yours off ebay by any chance? i emailed him too and he said £60. agreed to buy it, then he said it was sold.

let you know how i get on, something for thursday evening i think...

dude. not sure i should tell you but thats who got my arb off....arriving tomorrow apparently. also his prices seem quite variable!!

but even with 98.9 feedback and 915(*) rating im sure itwont be a scam. was the paypal adres khadwick somthing?

Guys, adding a larger front arb will make the car understeer more, not oversteer.

Also, worth noting, the STD front arbs fitted to both my a3's (1998 and 2001) have been 21mm!

There is no OEM rear arb you can fit either. 4wd ones are totally different, and none of the fwd cars on the platform have a rear arb from the factory.

Not what you wanted to hear, but aftermarket at around £150 is your only option!

Rear arb is SERIOUSLY worth doing though, transforms the car!

mmm. good to be confirm prawn. cheers.

assuming i have a 19mm the TT bar will be the same as mine so will make no difference. If i have a 21mm bar then the TT bar will be thinner so will decrease oversteer, but increase body roll. either way it sounds like the thicker s3 or r32 bar is a bad idea. i guess i have a 19mm bar as i just bought standard inner bushes off ebay and they wouldn't have fitted if they were 21mm would they?

either way, if anyone wants one, seller nkrmotorsalvage on ebay has an s3 bar for sale for £45 posted.

right, i'm off to do more research....i mean work. ha ha

found this from an old thread

1.6 / 1.8 = 18mm
1.8 T = 19mm
1.8 T Quattro = 20mm
1.8 T S3 = 21mm

i did read somewhere that they changed arbs in the a3 to try and reduce the over steer so maybe that accounts for prawns having the 21mm bars? or maybe they were swapped previously. can't find any info on it now though.hmmm.

The bars on both of mine were 100% original, both 21mm for sure.

Steve, a thinner bar at the front will INCREASE oversteer mate.

A 21mm s3 front bar would be a great idea for the a3. I wouldn't go down to a 19mm bar at all because it'll just make it roll more!

I run a 26mm front H&R bar on my daily with a 25mm eibach rear, it feels very neutral.
On the track car I run an eibach TT 22mm front bar, with a neuspeed 32mm rear race bar, this setup is far too twitchy for a road car, with the back end comming out very easily, but it's epic on track of you keep your wits about you

cheers prawn.
the TT bar hasn't turned up yet as promised. i'll see how it pans out. i may buy the s3 bar anyway and decide which is best and sell the other. the a3 should have a 19mm bar from everything i've read. so confused! i think if the TT bar is the same as the a3 on my car it will be ok.

Bear in mind the torsion beam on the rear acts like an antiroll bar anyway, which is why the car doesnt have a rear bar as standard.

Obviously you can always add another bar as well, just dont compare it to a quattro and think "wow that quattro has got a xx mm rear bar and i dont have any"

just had a go at the guy and he said in CAPITALS you will get it friday! as i said ill have a refund instead if i dont get it this week. just protecting myself incase its a scam and ive pasted the date on when i can claim money back etc :) he messaged u yet mate

yeah, said it was sent parcel force and may arrive today....frickin ebay! the good old days of walking in a shop and paying more seem appealing all of a sudden!

it really piskes me off when stuff doesn't arrive so you chace up and there all like 'I SAID I SENT IT!' and a week later its still not arrived. always something you really need urgent as well. that new battery for your watch from Hong Kong only takes 8 days though...

mines just arrived...so there! :) job for tonight. i bet it rains, but not until half the cars apart :)

Just noticed the color of your car...

Looks the same as our A4, Berry Pearl, LZ4W:

nice one! i thought mine was the only one audi ever made :)

i'll have to check the paint code now and let you know!

old photo but shows colour well

I'm not sure why, but I love that colour steve!

it is impossible to photograph! every day it seems to look different, and differnet angles too! the one in my sig changes colour across the car in the same photo!

to be honest i only bought the car because of the colour :)

Yep its awesome. If its dull and dirty it looks almost burgandy, and then changes thru purple to almost pink in bright sun. Amazing flake pop too.

right boys and girls. back on topic. TT arb is on...NEVER AGAIN! what a PITA!! and then it got dark :)

i could just not work out how to get the ****** thing out once loose! ended up undoing all 4 subframe bolts, remove dog bone mount and pass side driveshaft and brute force and ignorance. i should realy have removed the steering rack too to get a good drop on it. new tt arb slipped in with minimal effort. until i realised the arb doesn't lift out the way anymore and i had fitted the driveshaft under it. ******. back off again! :) whoever designed this should be shot! either way, its done now.

so new arb is on and it has no clunks or rubbing! yay. i need to rethink the drop links as they are very stretched and cutting then down previously just makes the angle worse so i think i will lengthen them and add 'dog legs' as such to bring them more in line so they don't look so stretched!

prawn was indeed right, my old arb was 21mm and new one was 19mm. my god! what a difference to drive, bit more body roll (but not too bad due to coillies) but so much less understeer which is never a bad thing. feels much better imo!

Aud-tk. took me 2 hours to do, but give yourself longer. if i was to do it again i would just cut the old arb in half and slide out! haynes said 'and remove' typical :)
