Just a quick question, roughly what is the max safe level that the 1.8 20v can handle in way of torque on standard internals and maintain reliability

Depends on torque spikes but i think its around 300 lb/ft.

Why mike?

Subjective at best as mileage seems to be making rod life a bit of a lottery... general rule of thumb is 300ftlb torque but.... and a big but!!! really does depend of condition/mileage of engine, turbo used, boost used etc etc... bigger turbos (GT2871r onwards) deliver power differently to smaller turbos like the K04/K03 and their hybrid brethren... smaller turbos are spikier in delivery and should not run high boost as the boost spike on spool will be the killer... BT's are so spiky so torque delivery is more gradual so less of a shock to the engine...

I have seen std engines throw rods and stage 1 mapped engines throw rods, BT engines generally speaking have had the rods done anyway so difficult to say and if a BT conversion is done when the engine is low mileage then this also seems to be less of an issue...

This is a topic for much debate (and please lets not start another rods thread from this one) but if your engine is high mileage and you plan to take your power over 300bhp (k04 hybrid, BT etc) then change them for peace of mind...

Keep the boost to 22psi max really for smaller turbos if not running rods...
