I've looked at a few of these options previously, but never really got anywhere with them as the manifold options were non-existant for longitudinal. I'm particularly wary of tubular manifolds, although having said that there does appear to be tubular turbo manifolds out there that DO stay in one piece.
    for an EVO twin scroll?
you have seen one of these in the flesh have'nt you?

Welly - have you had your car on any other rollers?

Dont know wether you know my I ditched my hybrid after 200 miles of running it in - what with the wastegate only opening 1.2mm and all the other hassle.

I went for a GT2871 on a top mount, works really well and has now made 368hp 333lbft at 24psi with a massively blowing turbo flange gasket.

You going down Santa pod this weekend? Would be good to see how the hybrid runs currently and when you do a swap to a decent turbo .

If you speak to Wilko he has had a fair few hits with IHI turbos and never will he go back to one again. They are pretty crap from what I have heard!

Yeh a friend of mines fitting one to a Volvo T5 engine in a Locost chassis.

Flange is a bit queer, but i have seen them available to buy, and nothing a bit of welding cant sort after that!

Sadly not mate, parent duty rules me out of most weekend activities...

did you ever get your hybrid working right before ditching it ?

gt2871 depending on hotsides 360-380bhp in my experience, but was until close to 4krpm they ripped which is where gt30's get going

    the polos t3-t04e i did spooled faster 1bar @ 3300rpm in 4th and went on to >440bhp

wilkos consummed many a vf unit.. bearings in the main fail, but mine never did, and ate hotsides instead.
he likes his 18g but is 2ltr remember

Got it working best we could with the wastegate only opening so far - didnt know it was only opening 1.2mm until I removed the turbo - massive oversight on my part or the people who supplied it I'll let you decide, but once it was returned to me there was no way I was putting it back on the car. So went with a tried and tested way.

Yes the 2871 deffinately has a fair bit of lag - not really bothered though as I rarely use the car and only really want to go to the dragstrip!

Thats as far as I'll be going with the 1.8 - I think any bigger a turbo woul dhave to be a bigger engine but I fancy something different after this summer.

Epic. Lookie what I found about the very turbo in question.....

    Fourtitude.com - 410bhp 513nm torque-PE1820

    513 NM Torque? F**k me.

Adding to that - from 23 PSI boost? Double f**k me.

Would it not be better to stick a small port head on, ye it will choke earlier but will give you quicker spool and a lower boost threshold.

Spool change from the difference in heads is practically nil to be honest dude. Large port is by far the better choice for any application IMO as the difference in the engine's characteristics is large.

The large ports heads are SO much more efficient in every single way, there is no good reason for choosing small port, where there is that choice to be made of course.

Thats pretty tasty looking, i'll give you that!

Also, it has more power by 3500rpm than my engine has anywhere in the rev range!

Fair enough buddy. Just I have always taken a big orifice is good for high end flow but not so good at low end flow. I thought your hybrid had a fairly BT sort of characteristics.

To be honest dude, the head once changed made next to no difference in spool on the same engine setup.

I think your're right on the theory, however to be fair, the air only moves slower on the inbound side of the cylinder.

The engine is physically ingesting a comparable amount of air, if not slightly more. The outbound side of the cylinder is the same, ports are the same size, same manifold, and thus it affects spool very little as the same volume of air is passing through the turbo at a similar speed.

I see what your saying welly. I was looking at some pics I got of when I had my head off and the exhaust ports are pretty small. Didnt know that the large and small port heads had the same exhaust port diameter.

You going to do any head work as in porting. Ever thought about getting a better flowing inlet mani.

So how much difference in cash are you expecting this 50bhp to be once you offset selling the hybrid etc on and map tweaks @ n P/H

A lot of money for a few more BHP and possibly no better reliability.

But hey, it's your cash and time mate, so good luck.

Had i relised how crap my hrbrid was against the K04s you lot get, i would have gone straighy to a larger frame turbo ( providied there was anyone reliable to tune such)

OK, so after 76 posts (how?!) I've got some photos ready to go...

Popped into Bill's last night to mock up the fitment and get a feel for where everything will need to go - mainly the TIP and oil/coolant lines.

To be fair, it looks like it should fit into the engine bay with some minor modifications, shouldn't be the end of the world.

Oil and coolant lines and going to be flexible braided hose based, rather than hard piping. It's easier to manipulate them and make them run around things. I will most likely pop to a hydraulics company up the road from Bill who did my PAS pipe to get some idea of pricing for the unions required.

The other things that will be a challenge will be the down pipe, however Bill will be sorting that as the final part of the build me thinks, once everything else is in.

The S3 will be coming off the road at the end of this weekend. I runs out of MOT Monday next week, and I don't see the point in getting it done solely to have it sat in the garage and wasting time, and eating into the MOT time...

I have found another car I plan to buy as a run about. A 306 D Turbo with tax and test (and a bargain price) should do the trick for getting about, and then I can sling it through the auctions after should I decide to not keep it.

Have confirmed use of my garage - need to get in there and sort it out though before a car will fit.... :-/.

Money is sorted. Aiming to do it on a 2500 budget, with a reasonable chunk of that coming from the sale of the gear I currently have. That includes a few hundred quid for contingency which hopefully won't be required, but in my experience will be....

I am excited to get on and start this - will suck to not have the S3 on the road for a bit though. However a few months driving a diesel to work and back alone in money saved on fuel... should pay for the project in money saved on fuel.

Still need to knock together a parts list, however will do all that sort of jazz today whilst at work.

    Some photos then....

Well, they are slightly curved, but to be honest I can't see that making a difference. The curves are very gradual and sweeping, so would have thought restrictions would be minimal.

Sadly yes, and that is solely due to the lack of MOT basically.

It won't pass an emissions test now mate to be fair, so there will be very little difference before and after... It's just a waste of 2 months of ticket.
