Can you just take the mirror covers off?? help!

Right... can you take just the alu covers off without taking the whole mirror off?

im swapping my alu ones for some blue ones but i dont really want to break anything and i dont really want to get a garage to do it..

so can someone give me a good guide on how to change these.

    thanks

just a bit unsure how to get the glass out? where do you level that again? just along the top edge and then the bottom edge until it comes out?

The glass is attached at the sides. They are a push fit.

You lever it out at the bottom first and then at the top.

    Whoa, whoa, whoa....

If you remove the two screws from underneath first...then remove the little black lower trip piece, you will be able to get your fingers in and pop the glass off from behind...

A lot less chance of breaking the glass that way.

After that, and with the glass off and disconnected, if you pull upwards on the alloy housing it will come off with the merest force...

The blanking plates come off easily...

And even if they don't, and you break one...they are FAR cheaper than heated glasses for the mirrors!

Just out of curiosity why are you swapping the Alu for blue ones?

The polished alloy / chrome ones, I have to agree...since the likes of Halfords have been selling them for every chav-chariot out there...the image has gone through the floor.

The brushed alloy RS type look good though...until 'in-pro' or the like, produce a cheap and nasty version of them and they join 'chrome mirrors', 3 spoke wheels, neons, w**ker lights, spinners and the like on the list of the most nasty items...as fitted to the very highest level of chav-chariot out there.
    Sad.

True, there are other ways of doing things, I'm just quoting what the audi manual says.

By all means if popping off the glass from behind works better then you should do it that way.

    I appreciate that...

But there is less chance of cracking the glass if you pop it off from nearer the centre..as opposed to levering it off from the edges.

There was someone on the forum yesterday looking for some S3 mirrors. Might be worth speaking to him if you are getting rid of yours.

Hey Guys thanks for the replies. it's the full mirrors I'm thinkin off fitting no just the covers. Thanks a lot though, I'll check the different ones out. But would you say ordering it from Audi will cost too much?
