replacement gearbox, which codes?

hi there was just wondering what the codes mean on the s3/tt gearboxes. my knackered gearbox from my 99 apy is DQB, but have noticed ones that are coded FHB. do they all fit or are there differances that are gonna make fitting a ******? thanks in advance!

where did you source your replacement? im scared to buy a second hand one to find its a pile of poo. been thinking about getting the one i have reconed but it all depends how much its gonna cost really, its the diff thats broken so heres hoping rebuilding it wont cost too much!

I got a second hand one for £450 iirc delivered next day with a 3 month warranty and apparently 60k on it. It came from a company called motors in motion, they're a specialist vag dismantler. It depends how quickly you want/ need the box, it may well be cheaper to get your one refurbed, it'll just take longer.
There were boxes around for £100 but I thought that it was probably best to not just buy the cheapest one about lol. It is a bit of a minefield and you don't really know what you're going to get but if you get one with a warranty etc. At least you can send it back.

Well time isn't an issue so might just look into a recon was a really good smooth leak free box. Think I ruined it with too much fun and games in empty snowy carparks at the end of last year! I'm handy with a spanner, actually got the box out today, was kinda half tempted to open up the box myself but on second thoughts that might of opened a can of worms!

If you have a look you will see that they also replace the rivets that join the crown wheel to the differetial cage with bolts. There is some history of these rivets failing (Jojo). My gearbox (O2M DBQ) broke a couple of weeks ago, however, it was the 5/6th selector fork that broke on mine.

I rang these guys last week to look into sourcing a recondition DBQ box and they said that they didnt have any in stock, so i then asked whats the significance of DBQ and could I have another O2M type box fitted to my car, the guy replied by saying that his "system" shows that this is the only box that will fit my car..... how true that is i dont know

You can send you box to them if it is serviceable and they will recondition that for you, they gave me a price of 645 +VAT

very intresting never knew the rivits were an issue, not a bad price really considering the warranty that comes with it.

nor had i, but whilst i am having my gearbox repaired i am having the crown wheel rivets replaced with bolts. Incidently, the actual failure of my 5/6th selector fork was that the rivet that joins it to the steel arm sheared clean off.

i always thought the gearboxes were meant to be pretty bullet proof. i had a 106 gti many years ago and you wouldnt believe the amount of gearbox failures it had!

yeah thats what i thought, the guy at the garage was scratching his head as well as he says they are usually bullet proof. He has heard of the crown wheel rivets being a problem but no the selector fork rivet. But if you do a bit of digging you can find that other people have experienced similar problems

I broke mine trying to get it home after the clutch pedal snapped.
