PAINT PROTECTION FILM

Hi All, Can anyone help ? I want to replace the stonechip protection on the sills of my pre-facelift S3, to th rear just in front of rear wheels, I bought some film off Ebay with a view to cutting to shape, but on closer inspection noticed the original is a lot thicker and set in a recess.

Just wondering how anyone else has replaced this - original is looking discoloured & tatty now.
