    A3 1800 Turbo Sport

    My wife recently bought an 03 plate A3 1800 Turbo Sport and when she brought it home I couldn't wait to jump in and take it for a spin. However, it is gutless after around 2000rpm and hardly has enough power to overtake - definately not what I expected from a Turbo sport!

    Anyone tell me where to start looking - is this a common problem?

    Hmmm. Perhaps a buggered turbo or disconnected pipe?

    How do I check for 'buggered turbo', is it something the dealer will have to do?

    First port of call would be to check for fault codes, you don't need to take the car to a dealer as most decent independants will have the kit to read the codes but it would be advisable to take your car to a specialist in VAGs rather than a general garage as they will have more experience of the sort of issues relating to these engines...

    I took it to my local garage (specialises in VW's, Audi's and Skoda's) who hooked it up to his machine. The readings resulted in a new Air Source Meter and Temperature Sensor, which improved things, but it is still flat - he's offered to have another look free of charge but I was wondering if there is a common fault that doesn't show up via the 'normal' channels.

    I'm not expecting a mind blowing performance but my other car is a 105bhp Golf TDi and it is much quicker than this Audi!!!

    I'd of said possibly the maf, try disconnecting it and going for a drive, if things improve then that's your fault, if they don't then you can definately rule that out..,

    At the risk of sounding thick, what is a 'maf' and where is it! My DIY mechanicing days stopped about 15 years ago when I got my first company car!

    MAF = Mass air flow meter, and is found on a pipe coming from your airbox or cone with a connector on it

    No. 10 is the MAF.

    Yeah sorry mate, the air box on the right of your engine bay has a fat pipe coming out of it, there should be an electrical connector going into the pipe, just unclip that and go for a drive.

    You'll get a fault light come up on the dash but it'll go out when you plug the connector back in...
